Hostile Ryder Cup? Europe told to embrace New York cauldron in pep talk from legends<\/p>\n
Despite being on the winning side in 2018 and 2023, they were part of the team beaten on American soil four years ago.<\/p>\n
This year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black<\/a> will also be the first since Rahm<\/a> and Hatton signed with LIV Golf<\/a>.<\/p>\n They signed up within a month of each other shortly after the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone and both play for the Legion XIII team on the tour.<\/p>\n Players have been hit with sanctions by both the PGA Tour<\/a> and DP World Tour for defecting to the Saudi-backed league in recent years.<\/p>\n However, the duo are both allowed to feature for Luke Donald’s Team Europe in New York despite the penalties that have previously been imposed.<\/p>\n Bryson DeChambeau<\/a> is the only member of Team USA to play in the LIV Golf League.<\/p>\n What sanctions do LIV Golf players face?<\/p>\n LIV Golf stars have been hit with sanctions since the league’s first event was held back in 2022.<\/p>\n The PGA Tour suspended all current and former players taking part in the then invitational tournament in London three years ago.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the DP World Tour won a legal battle the following year which allowed them to hand out fines and suspensions.<\/p>\n Players have since been penalised for competing in conflicting LIV Golf tournaments whilst holding DP World Tour memberships.<\/p>\n 2<\/p>\n DeChambeau won the 2024 US Open despite sanctions against LIV playersCredit: Getty<\/p>\n Despite those sanctions, though, LIV players have been able to continue competing at major championships.<\/p>\n This is possible through either specific exemptions created for LIV stars or through traditional qualification criteria.<\/p>\n Those avenues include previous major wins, which saw 2020 US Open champion DeChambeau claim a second title at Pinehurst last year.<\/p>\n Why are Rahm and Hatton allowed to play at the Ryder Cup?<\/p>\n In order to play for Europe at the Ryder Cup<\/a>, players must hold a DP World Tour membership.<\/p>\n Both Rahm and Hatton have been able to maintain their tour status despite fines and suspensions for competing in LIV Golf.<\/p>\n By timing their appearances, they are able to play at enough events to keep their memberships whilst still paying fines and serving suspensions.<\/p>\n 2<\/p>\n Hatton and Rahm are both part of Donald’s team after keeping their DP World Tour statusCredit: Getty<\/p>\n Hatton appeared at six DP World Tour events in 2024 to remain as a member of the tour for this year’s schedule.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Rahm’s three tournaments included finishing second on home soil at the Open de Espana.<\/p>\n As a result, they were both eligible for a place on Donald’s roster at the 45th Ryder Cup.<\/p>\n Hatton subsequently earned his spot<\/a> as one of six automatic qualifiers from the European points list.<\/p>\n![\"DeChambeau](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/bryson-dechambeau-united-states-celebrates-910154067.jpg\")
