Nick Cave<\/a>\u2019s writing style has evolved a lot, but also kind of not at all. Long gone is the wild punk, but even now as the wise, aged poet, his songwriting is instantly recognisable.<\/p>\n It goes beyond just his songs even. In Cave\u2019s written work, like his novels, his epic poem \u2018The Sick Bag Song\u2019, or even on his Red Hand Files newsletter, there is a certain quality to his work. It has a particular tone and feel, like all good writers have, that make it obviously his.\u00a0<\/p>\n It\u2019s almost impossible to adequately define. There\u2019s a lushness to Cave\u2019s scribing, found in his rich literary metaphors, like on a song like \u2018The Lyre of Orpheus\u2019, or the religious imagery in \u2018Frogs\u2019. But there\u2019s also a flippancy that offsets it, like in \u2018Song of the Lake\u2019, the euphoric opening track to Wild God<\/a>, where Cave toys with poetic phrasing before throwing it away with \u201coh never mind, never mind\u201d.<\/p>\n It\u2019s clearly a balance of skill, practice, inspiration and raw talent, a mix of the art he\u2019s engaged with in his life and his natural inner voice. But Cave is aware of it. He knows how he writes, and he also knows exactly how he can\u2019t seem to write, no matter how hard he tries. In particular, he knows he could never write like one of his idols, James Brown. <\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t write that \u2018I love you, baby\u2019, which are the songs I love, like a James Brown song, that just come and \u2018get funky!\u2019\u201d Cave told Interview, well aware of his limitations.\u00a0<\/p>\n While Brown was always busy declaring things like \u201cI feel good!\u201d, or \u201cTake me home!\u201d, simple statements for simple feelings, Cave can\u2019t seem to allow himself that. Instead, he\u2019s more likely to describe feelings of love or lust with some long-winded tale replete with mythical figures, a cast of characters, ten different references and a complete avoidance of the L-word itself.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve always found that that\u2019s just the way I write. If I can\u2019t visualise the thing on the page, it\u2019s completely meaningless to me,\u201d he said, as he feels the need to extend feelings into something that makes more sense to him. Those elusive emotions don\u2019t, but stories do with clear motivations and plot points.\u00a0<\/p>\n But actually, in his own listening habits, that\u2019s not what he\u2019s drawn to. As an audience, he\u2019s all for simplicity, but as a writer, he can\u2019t do it. \u201cThey\u2019re the songs that I really respond to myself. But I\u2019m a storyteller,\u201d he explained, unable to ever access whatever his own musical heroes were.<\/p>\n
