Choosing this form of transportation for your errands instead of driving or taking the train may also help you prevent cognitive decline, a recent study found.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000p3b6nsp2tffqb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/17\/health\/biking-workout-exercise-routine-benefits-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Riding a bike<\/a> is associated with a 19% lower risk of all-cause dementia and a 22% lower risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, compared with taking nonactive travel modes such as a car, bus or train, <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2835115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found the study<\/a> that assessed nearly 480,000 participants from Great Britain and published in the journal JAMA Network Open.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000q3b6nzz8mtv6h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Physical activity has long been  associated with lower dementia risk in multiple studies, so much so that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/31\/health\/dementia-childhood-risk-factors-study-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2024 Lancet Commission<\/a> identified it as one of 14 factors responsible for preventing or delaying approximately 45% of dementia cases. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/29\/health\/anxiety-increases-dementia-risk-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">55 million people<\/a> worldwide have dementia, a number expected to nearly triple by 2050.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000r3b6nvnmy10h4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAlthough population-based evidence on the health effects of active travel remains scarce, systematic reviews have consistently highlighted its association with improved health outcomes, including a lower risk of diabetes,\u201d the authors of the paper wrote. Few studies until now, however, have investigated the association between travel mode, dementia risk and structural brain changes, they added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000s3b6n4mnsn8z0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study participants were recruited between 2006 and 2010 for the UK Biobank study, which has followed the health outcomes of more than 500,000 people age 40 to 69. Participants, who were age 56.5 on average, answered questionnaires about which of four transportation modes they had used most often to get around in the past four weeks, not including journeys to or from work: nonactive, walking, mixed walking (a combination of walking and nonactive travel modes) and cycling and mixed cycling (a combination of cycling and other modes).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000t3b6njhvrxvki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over a median follow-up period of 13.1 years, 8,845 participants developed dementia, and 3,956 adults developed Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Walking and mixed walking were linked with a 6% lower risk of dementia and, interestingly, a 14% higher risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease. The research team also discovered that the <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5839141\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strongest genetic risk factor<\/a> for Alzheimer\u2019s \u2014 the APOE \u03b54 gene \u2014 also had an influence. Participants without APOE \u03b54 had a 26% lower risk of dementia, while those with the genetic variant had a 12% lower risk.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000u3b6ni0hs6btf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cycling and mixed cycling were also most associated with greater hippocampal volumes, the region of the brain responsible for memory and learning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000v3b6nmg3oc89b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis study is the first to show that cycling is linked not only to a lower risk of dementia but also to a larger hippocampus,\u201d said Dr. Joe Verghese, professor and chair of neurology at Stony Brook University in New York, via email. Verghese was not involved in the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000w3b6n0dzkm5po@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The strengths of the study are impressive, but there are caveats, Dr. Sanjula Singh, principal investigator at the Brain Care Labs at Massachusetts General Hospital, said via email. She was also not involved in the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000x3b6nxbi2b74x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTravel modes were self-reported at a single time point, so we don\u2019t know how people\u2019s habits changed over time,\u201d said Singh, who is also an instructor of neurology at Harvard Medical School. \u201cMost participants were White and healthier at baseline, so the results may not generalize to all communities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000y3b6nu6ykopi7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnd, perhaps most importantly, because this is an observational study, it cannot prove that cycling directly prevents dementia,\u201d Singh added. \u201cIt merely shows a found association.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq000z3b6n6o9on0kv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Older adults who cycle regularly are likely a healthier subgroup, and cycling may also serve as a marker of favorable genetics, with risk lowest among those without genetic susceptibility to dementia, Verghese said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq00103b6n503ubwof@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Participants who chose active travel modes were more likely to be women, nonsmokers, more educated, engaged in more physical activity in general and have a lower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/24\/health\/bmi-versus-body-fat-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">body mass index<\/a> and fewer chronic diseases, the authors wrote. Cycling and mixed-cycling groups, specifically, were more often men and those who had healthier lifestyles and physical conditions than their peers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq00113b6nx9vh7xxm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The link between greater Alzheimer\u2019s disease risk and the preference for walking could be explained by those participants potentially already having issues with balance or driving, said Dr. Glen Finney, a behavioral neurologist and director of the Memory and Cognition Program at Geisinger Health System in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq00123b6nwe3yet7v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/11\/health\/walking-fast-benefits-study-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walking pace<\/a> also matters, Finney, a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, added. Leisurely walking, especially for short distances, may not be enough to get the full potential benefit compared with walking longer distances at a brisker pace. The study did not report on the frequency, pace or duration of participants\u2019 walking or cycling habits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq00133b6n5qqh32s0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Regardless, decades of research have shown that exercise is good for the brain, Verghese said. \u201cCycling may reduce dementia risk by improving cardiovascular fitness, increasing blood flow to the brain, supporting neuroplasticity, and improving metabolism.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq00143b6nvskvbl0s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cycling also requires more effort and different types of engagement from the brain, which may also contribute to any potential boost in protection against dementia, the authors wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq00153b6nvd1357ss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019re typically sedentary and want to start cycling, discuss with your doctor whether you\u2019re healthy enough to begin immediately or whether you need to work up to it, Verghese said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq00163b6n3lcrmbad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBegin with short, safe routes on dedicated bike paths before moving into traffic,\u201d Singh said. \u201cAlways wear a helmet, use reflective gear, and add lights if biking or walking at night. Stick to well-lit routes and, if possible, travel with a partner.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq00173b6nx9fr0go9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cycling even just once or a few times per week can make a difference, Singh added, and indoor stationary cycling \u2014 though not included in the study \u2014 is an option for those concerned about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/03\/11\/health\/cycling-to-work-benefits-injuries-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">safety from traffic<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfredyyq00183b6npfsip41j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For walking, aim for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/11\/health\/walking-fast-benefits-study-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brisk, purposeful treks<\/a>, and build up your distance over time, Singh suggested. That could mean walking for at least 30 minutes daily, ideally at a level of intensity that makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/26\/health\/talk-test-exercise-intensity-cdc-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">talking a little difficult<\/a>, Verghese said. Adults need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/11\/25\/health\/world-health-organization-physical-activity-guidelines-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at least 150 to 300 minutes<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/10\/health\/cardio-aerobic-exercise-routine-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moderate aerobic activity<\/a> or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise per week, according to the World Health Organization.\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmfr5et7r00063b6n2zxv8wwm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/newsletters\/fitness-life-but-better?source=nl-acq_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN\u2019s Fitness, But Better newsletter series<\/a>.
