(ABC Capricornia: Freya Jetson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Once we see them smooching, we pull the fence down and observe to make sure they&#8217;re getting on fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If you don&#8217;t pair them in the right way, you can start losing crocs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;More to learn about croc behaviour<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Department of Environment <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-10-14\/queensland-crocodile-sightings-on-the-rise-after-wet-weather\/104256764\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104256764\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">estimates there are up to 30,000 saltwater and freshwater crocodiles<\/a> in Queensland, mostly in the state&#8217;s north.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Cameron Baker, a postdoctoral research fellow at Charles Darwin University, said in the wild, crocodile mating could be a slow process, with not every reptile a fan of the local dating scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Each individual [crocodile] has a different personality,&#8221; Dr Baker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve found that some individuals were much more sociable \u2026 whereas others were solitary trying to avoid interaction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It could very well be different personalities, same as some couples in humans just don&#8217;t work together and are incompatible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Baker, who specialises in ecology, behaviour and social structure of the saltwater crocodile, said communities of crocs that formed along rivers were influenced by both the environment and dominant males.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A front-on close-up of a crocodile laying on a muddy river bank.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1f0546b9aff3f67fe3969d0b203ec20b\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The new offences and penalties have already come into effect. (ABC Far North: Christopher Testa)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Dr Baker said crocodile breeding season, from September to February, could up-end those communities and was a time when authorities warned people to be particularly careful around the ancient reptiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We see the complete disintegration of these social communities [during breeding season] with females moving off to nesting and then males seemed to move switching between looking for a mate or food,&#8221; Dr Baker said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So you see an increase of aggression at this point as males are trying to really stake their turf.&#8221;Not just territorial males<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Lever said while the mating season rolled around each year, the reptile&#8217;s breeding patterns were unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He recalled a 3.2-metre female saltwater crocodile that was brought to the farm from Sarina, south of Mackay, after the government requested it be removed from a suburban beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Saltwater crocodiles are a protected species that are relocated when deemed to be a &#8220;problem crocodile&#8221;, based on behaviour and location.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man and a woman holding crocs\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ba059854a2288e1f9c608297051560d8\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">John and Lillian Lever opened their crocodile farm in 1981. (Supplied: John Lever)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Lever said he had high expectations from the croc \u2014 one of the largest he&#8217;d seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I thought, &#8216;Wow, what a fabulous big girl&#8217;,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But while the farm&#8217;s female crocodiles lay an average of 43 eggs per year, Mr Lever said the Sarina croc laid none \u2014 despite causing chaos among eligible bachelors and scaring other females.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;She wanted them all to herself, so she kept the other females away from the males,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>More than matchmaking<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The dating game at Koorana, a commercial farm that supplies leather and meat to Australian and international business, is not only about helping the crocodiles find companions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The farm also functions as an opportunity for researchers to spend more time observing and learning about crocodiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That includes a world-first project to protect female crocodiles from being attacked <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-12-22\/crocodiles-artificial-insemination-research-trial\/104731016\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104731016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by their mates, by using artificial insemination.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Group of researchers standing at a lab\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1c223feac5436760ecb74b377b67c897\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Researchers are studying the fertility and genetics of male crocodiles.
