{"id":151909,"date":"2025-09-21T21:42:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-21T21:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/151909\/"},"modified":"2025-09-21T21:42:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-21T21:42:11","slug":"white-tailed-eagles-soar-again-five-decades-after-reintroduction-to-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/151909\/","title":{"rendered":"White-Tailed Eagles soar again five decades after reintroduction to Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They\u2019re the largest bird of prey in Scotland with a wingspan that can reach more than two metres.<br \/>The White-Tailed Eagle are becoming a common sight once again after they were reintroduced in Scotland 50 years ago in 1975.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes called sea eagles, the birds were hunted to point of extinction more than a hundred years ago, but now their numbers are growing.<\/p>\n<p>Dave Sexton has spent years monitoring the birds for RSPB Scotland and explained: \u201cThe last eagle was shot in Shetland in 1918; their disappearance was entirely due to human persecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we have more than 200 breeding pairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were reintroduced onto the Isle of Rum and have continued to thrive from there; they\u2019re a common sight now along the west coast around Mull for example and there\u2019s a pair in the Cairngorms now too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dream would be to one day see them back in Shetland, they\u2019ve touched base there but they\u2019re not there permanently as of yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farm losses<\/p>\n<p>The bird\u2019s reintroduction has been contentious however, with sea eagles hitting the headlines earlier this month amid claims they were stealing Shetland pony foals in South Uist.<\/p>\n<p>A Nature Scot investigation later found that the bones in nearby nests were from fish, rabbits and geese.<\/p>\n<p>Farming unions say many of their members have had lambs stolen by sea eagles and argue more needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>Farmer Robert Macdonald is a representative for the NFUS and said: \u201cAreas around Mull are particularly affected \u2013 there\u2019s one farm where the farm losses are running into the tens of thousands every single year.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stv.tv\/highlands-islands\/farmer-heartbroken-amid-claims-sea-eagles-stealing-shetland-pony-foals-from-south-uist-farm\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"336\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/a6c78fe5903066433ece3cb81e588ca4-1756980832-336x216.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe the bird\u2019s success was foreseen, so there\u2019s no exit strategy.
