{"id":15207,"date":"2025-07-22T10:24:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T10:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/15207\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T10:24:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T10:24:10","slug":"mike-lynchs-estate-owes-hewlett-packard-730m-judge-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/15207\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Lynch\u2019s estate owes Hewlett Packard \u00a3730m, judge rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hewlett-Packard is owed \u00a3730 million ($944 million) from the estate of the late Mike Lynch and his former business partner over its acquisition of their British software firm Autonomy, a judge at London\u2019s High Court said.<\/p>\n<p>HP was seeking to recoup its losses from Lynch, who died last year when his luxury yacht Bayesian sank off Sicily, and Autonomy\u2019s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain.<\/p>\n<p>The US technology giant sued Lynch and Hussain accusing them of masterminding an elaborate fraud to inflate the value of Autonomy, which HP bought for $11.1 billion in 2011 before the deal spectacularly unravelled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">HP wrote down Autonomy\u2019s value by $8.8 billion within a year and brought a $5 billion lawsuit against Lynch and Hussain in London, with a judge ruling in HP\u2019s favour in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>William Hill owner posts rise in revenues<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"William Hill betting shop sign.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/\/b2174593-caee-4373-8324-13e9ed99de7d.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Evoke\u2019s retail division benefited from the rollout of 5,000 new gaming machines across its 1,300-plus betting shops<\/p>\n<p>ALAMY<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The gambling group behind William Hill reported a 3 per cent increase in revenues during the six months to the end of June, as a result of tight cost controls, growth in its core international markets and its retail division returning to growth in the second quarter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Evoke, formerly 888 Holdings, said its retail division benefited from the rollout of 5,000 new gaming machines across its 1,300-plus betting shops. This growth offset a softer performance of its sports segment, which had been boosted by the Euros football championship a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The company excerpt first half adjusted profits in the range of \u00a3163 million and \u00a3167 million, a 43 per cent year-on-year increase on last year at the mid-point. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Shares in Evoke, which also reaffirmed its full-year profit and revenue guidance, rose 1 per cent to 62\u00bdp.<\/p>\n<p>It is right to look at state pension age, says Reeves<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Rachel Reeves said a review into raising the state pension age is needed to ensure the system is \u201csustainable and affordable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The chancellor said today: \u201cWe have just commissioned a review of pensions adequacy, so whether people are saving enough for retirement, and also the state pension age. As life expectancy increases, it is right to look at the state pension age to ensure that the state pension is sustainable and affordable for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The review is expected to report in March 2029. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The state pension age is currently 66, rising to 67 by 2028, and the government is legally required to review the age periodically<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The infrastructure and construction group has announced that chief executive Andrew Davies is stepping down after more than six years in the role. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He will be replaced by Stuart Togwell, the head of Kier\u2019s construction business, on November 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Davies was appointed as chief executive in April 2019, and undertook a strategic review to cut debt and boost operations by selling its housebuilding unit and cutting over 1,000 jobs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The shares were trading around 300p when Davies took up the role and have fallen during his tenure. The shares fell 5 per cent to 199p this morning.<\/p>\n<p>UK borrowing: economists expect tax rises\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Rob Wood, Pantheon Macroeconomics: \u201cWe estimate that the chancellor\u2019s \u00a39.9 billion of headroom has turned into a \u00a313 billion hole, meaning that Rachel Reeves would need to raise taxes or cut spending by a little over \u00a320 billion in the Autumn budget to restore her slim margin of headroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Alex Kerr, Capital Economics: \u201cDespite the \u00a33.6 billion overshoot in June, public borrowing is still in line with the OBR\u2019s forecasts after the first three months of the fiscal year. But things will probably get worse for the chancellor. We think that she will need to raise \u00a315 billion to \u00a325 billion at the budget later this year, with higher taxes doing most of the heavy lifting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Philip Shaw, Investec: \u201cThere is no denying that fiscal developments have been very disappointing so far this financial year, and Rachel Reeves will almost certainly be investigating potential revenue raising measures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FTSE 100 struggles to extend high<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">London\u2019s leading share index is trading largely flat this morning after hitting a new record on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The FTSE 100 rose above 9,000 points for the first time to close at 9,012.99, helped by rising gold and copper prices. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on pharmaceuticals as soon as the end of the month as he steps up pressure on big pharma to shift manufacturing and investment to the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business-money\/companies\/article\/astrazeneca-ceo-wants-to-move-britains-most-valuable-company-to-us-0j57vbwcf\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed<\/a> earlier this month that Sir Pascal Soriot, the long-serving chief executive of AstraZeneca, would like to move the group\u2019s stock market listing to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Compass raises full-year profit forecasts<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The FTSE 100 catering group has nudged full-year forecasts higher alongside third-quarter results and a \u20ac1.5 billion (\u00a31.3 billion) acquisition of Vermaat Groep, a food services business in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Compass, the world\u2019s largest catering group, said it now expected full-year underlying operating profit growth to be \u201ctowards 11 per cent\u201d, having previously guided to \u201chigh single digits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Organic revenue rose 8.6 per cent in the three months to the end of June.<\/p>\n<p>Sizewell C nuclear plant gets go-ahead<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The site of the Sizewell C nuclear power plant in Suffolk\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/\/9573934e-a977-4d46-a4bb-e1dfeee86e42.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The site of the Sizewell C nuclear power plant in Suffolk<\/p>\n<p>REUTERS<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The Sizewell C nuclear plant in Suffolk has got the go-ahead at an estimated cost of \u00a338 billion, with the taxpayer taking a 44.9 per cent stake in the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">British Gas owner Centrica will take a 15 per cent equity stake, British investment manager Amber Infrastructure 7.6 per cent, and Canada\u2019s La Caisse 20 per cent, alongside France\u2019s EDF with a previously announced 12.5 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The National Wealth Fund is to provide the majority of debt financing alongside Bpifrance Assurance Export.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The government said that Sizewell C would power the equivalent of six million homes and support 10,000 jobs once operational. It is a copy of the plant under construction at Hinkley Point C in Somerset, the costs of which are estimated to have ballooned to as much as \u00a348 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Debt interest bill rises to \u00a316.4 billion<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The government borrowed \u00a320.7 billion in June, \u00a36.6 billion more than in the month last year and the second-highest June borrowing since monthly records began in 1993, figures from the Office for National Statistics showed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The highest borrowing for the month was in 2020 during the pandemic. Economists had forecast borrowing of \u00a316.5 billion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The figures bolster the chances of Rachel Reeves announcing further tax rises at the autumn budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Interest payable on government debt increased by \u00a38.4 billion year-on-year to \u00a316.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Borrowing in the financial year so far was \u00a357.8 billion. America is among its biggest markets for exports.<\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The FTSE 100 is forecast to open around 24 points lower.
