Angelina Jolie<\/a>\u00a0has come out in defense of free speech and lamented that she does not ‘recognize’ the United States anymore.<\/p>\n

The actress, 50, made the remarks while promoting her new film Couture <\/a>at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

‘Anything, anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms, I think, is very dangerous,’ Jolie said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking about the political turmoil in the US, Jolie said that these are, ‘very, very heavy times’.<\/p>\n

‘I don\u2019t, at this time, recognize my country,’ she said. I\u2019ve always lived internationally. My family is international . My life, my world view, is equal [and] united.<\/p>\n

‘I think these are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. So I\u2019ll be careful in a press conference\u2026 But these are very, very heavy time.’<\/p>\n

Jolie said she fears censorship and that the US is living under ‘very heavy times’\u00a0<\/p>\n

The actress has long been <\/a>outspoken about political and international issues, but her latest take about the US rapidly sparked passionate reactions on the internet.<\/p>\n

One X user wrote: ‘I’m so glad she’s not a part of this country since she lives internationally away from it.’<\/p>\n

Another disagreed: ‘She’s absolutely correct.’<\/p>\n

A third said: ‘Nobody of intelligence cares what she thinks or feels. She’s shown her true self.’<\/p>\n

Jolie was previously a special envoy for the United Nations’ refugee aid agency between 2012-2022 and worked with the organization since 2001.<\/p>\n

In 2018, the actress hinted at a move<\/a> into politics – saying that she would ‘always go where I am needed.’<\/p>\n

Jolie said: ‘I don’t know if I’m fit for politics … but then I’ve also joked that I don’t know if I have a skeleton left in my closet.’<\/p>\n

She pointed to her work with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner.<\/p>\n

The actress has long been active in political and international issues and was a former\u00a0special envoy for the United Nations’ refugee aid agency<\/p>\n

‘I’m also able to work with governments,’ Jolie added. ‘So I sit in a very interesting place of being able to get a lot done, without a title and without it being about myself or my policies.’<\/p>\n

The 50-year-old visited the White House in September 2021 to support the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.<\/p>\n

Two years later, the Oscar winner joined then-US president Joe Biden<\/a> and first lady Jill Biden for a state dinner honoring the president of South Korea.<\/p>\n

Jolie had denounced Donald Trump’s policies<\/a> during his first administration.<\/p>\n

She wrote in an op-ed for The New York Times<\/a>: ‘We must never allow our values to become the collateral damage of a search for greater security.<\/p>\n

‘Shutting our door to refugees or discriminating among them is not our way, and does not make us safer.’<\/p>\n

Jolie’s father, Jon Voight, is known as one of Trump’s biggest supporters<\/a> in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

He was captured celebrating Trump’s election win<\/a> against Kamala Harris at a party alongside Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.<\/p>\n

Jolie previously attended a state dinner at the White House honoring the president of South Korea<\/p>\n

Trump awarded Voight with the National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Medal<\/a> in his first presidency.<\/p>\n

Voight previously criticized his daughter’s support for Palestine in comments to Variety<\/a>: ‘She has been exposed to propaganda.<\/p>\n

‘She’s been influenced by antisemitic people. Angie has a connection to the UN, and she’s enjoyed speaking out for refugees. But these people are not refugees.’<\/p>\n
