You probably already know the basics when it comes to eating for longevity: eating nutrient-rich whole foods and minimizing processed foods and soda. <\/p>\n<p>But eating for longevity isn\u2019t always so straightforward. The experts we spoke to said that there are some foods and drinks that many people use to make their diet healthier, but the reality is that they actually work against longevity instead of supporting it. Keep reading to find out what the sneakiest longevity sabotagers are.<\/p>\n<p>1. Overly processed meat alternatives<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve likely heard that eating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/is-protein-healthy_l_66db5de1e4b01c1d24fc1de6\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"primarily plant-based diet\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68bae665e4b09c6f4cf70e63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"66db5de1e4b01c1d24fc1de6\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">primarily plant-based diet<\/a> can add years to your life. But <a href=\"https:\/\/longevitylab.clinic\/practitioners\/dietitian\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Maria Kupreeva, \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68bae665e4b09c6f4cf70e63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/longevitylab.clinic\/practitioners\/dietitian\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maria Kupreeva, <\/a>a registered dietitian with integrative health clinic The Longevity Lab, shared that relying too heavily on overly processed meat alternatives can backfire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeat alternative products can be helpful for people who want to avoid meat for ethical or other reasons. They still provide protein and some other nutrients. But a lot of highly processed alternative meat products are high in sodium and have a lot of filler ingredients,\u201d Kupreeva shared. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9832237\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"High-sodium foods\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68bae665e4b09c6f4cf70e63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9832237\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">High-sodium foods<\/a> increase the risk for cardiovascular disease and other life-threatening conditions.<\/p>\n<p>When possible, Kupreeva recommends going for plant-based foods like beans, lentils, chickpeas and tofu over ultra-processed meat alternatives. When you do buy them, her advice is to check out the ingredients list (shorter with whole food plant sources is best) and nutritional panel, making sure the sodium isn\u2019t too high. Instant oatmeal<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to think of a breakfast that sounds healthier than oatmeal. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOats are great because they\u2019re high in fiber and have lots of B vitamins,\u201d Kupreeva said. Unfortunately, Kupreeva told HuffPost that instant oatmeal is often high in added sugar. And <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11287388\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"added sugar is a life shortener\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68bae665e4b09c6f4cf70e63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11287388\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">added sugar is a life shortener<\/a>, not a life lengthener.  <\/p>\n<p>There are a few reasons why consuming too much sugar can take years off your life. Gidwani explained that sugary foods (like flavored instant oatmeal) spike blood sugar levels. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6205735\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Scientific studies show\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68bae665e4b09c6f4cf70e63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6205735\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientific studies show<\/a> that when blood sugar levels are unstable and fluctuate regularly, it decreases lifespan. This is because unstable blood sugars increase the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease \u2014 all of which can shorten lifespan.<\/p>\n<p>To keep your oatmeal as healthy as possible, go for rolled oats and sweeten it with berries, a naturally sweet fruit that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38184200\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"scientifically shown to support longevity\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68bae665e4b09c6f4cf70e63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38184200\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scientifically shown to support longevity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3. Fruit juice <\/p>\n<p>It has fruit in the name, so it must be healthy, right? <a href=\"https:\/\/supp.co\/u\/darshan-shah\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Dr. Darshan Shah\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68bae665e4b09c6f4cf70e63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/supp.co\/u\/darshan-shah\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"12\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Darshan Shah<\/a>, a board-certified surgeon, founder of national longevity clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.next-health.com\/team\/dr-darshan-shah\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Next Health\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68bae665e4b09c6f4cf70e63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.next-health.com\/team\/dr-darshan-shah\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"13\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Next Health<\/a> and expert advisor at SuppCo, shared that fruit juice doesn\u2019t deserve its health halo. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFruit juice is high in sugar and low in fiber,\u201d he said. Kupreeva said this too, explaining that fruit juices don\u2019t have the fiber and other nutrients whole fruit do. <\/p>\n<p>Instead of drinking fruit juice, Kupreeva recommends eating whole fruit or sipping a smoothie, which still has all of the fiber and nutrients without any of the added sugar fruit juices often have.<\/p>\n<p>4. It will contain total sugar because of the fruit, which is fine, but if it\u2019s high in added sugar, she recommends skipping it. <\/p>\n<p>5. Protein powders and bars<\/p>\n<p>No nutrient gets more attention than protein and while it\u2019s important, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/eating-enough-protein_l_6895f260e4b001d68aee01fd\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"most people are getting enough\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68bae665e4b09c6f4cf70e63\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"6895f260e4b001d68aee01fd\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most people are getting enough<\/a>. Not only do you likely not need protein powders and bars, but the experts we talked to said that most of them do nothing in terms of longevity. \u201cProtein powders, while convenient, don\u2019t provide the same benefits as whole-food protein sources,\u201d Shah said. <\/p>\n<p>Gidwani added to this, saying that protein bars can be helpful if you\u2019re on-the-go and don\u2019t have access to whole food ingredients. But she said that many are made with added sugar and other additives that aren\u2019t good for health. <\/p>\n<p>Gidwani pointed out that the benefit of consuming protein-rich foods like eggs, edamame, chickpeas or tofu is that these foods have other nutrients in addition to protein. But all a protein powder is going to bring to the table is that one singular nutrient. <\/p>\n<p>6. Egg whites<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re at brunch and you hear someone order an egg white omelette, it can sound healthier than the scrambled eggs you\u2019re considering. Don\u2019t be fooled: It isn\u2019t. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEgg whites are overrated.
