{"id":153446,"date":"2025-09-22T16:41:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T16:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/153446\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T16:41:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T16:41:09","slug":"campaign-group-critical-of-spaceports-engagement-with-local-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/153446\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaign group critical of spaceport\u2019s engagement with local community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The spaceport was officially opened in May last year.<br \/>Photo: Shetland News<br \/>\nA CAMPAIGN group challenging the exploitation of space has criticised SaxaVord Spaceport \u2013 saying they are more interested in promoting to politicians and industry than forging better links with the local community.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceWatch UK was in Shetland in May this year to garner local views on the Unst-based spaceport, which is set to become the first in the UK to launch rockets into space, possibly even later this year.<\/p>\n<p>In its 20-page report, published today (Monday), SpaceWatch acknowledges widespread local support for the spaceport but said they also detected \u201csignificant reservations about a number of issues which were important to the local community\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, a local councillor representing the area said the \u201cnegative aspects of the report\u201d were not something that he recognises.<\/p>\n<p>SaxaVord Spaceport itself did not participate in SpaceWatch UK\u2019s \u201cfield study\u201d and also declined to comment on its findings.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceWatch said they spoke to 13 local people during their visit, with all conversations held on a non-attributable basis due to \u201ccertain sensitivities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Burt, one of the report authors, added: \u201cWe were unable to speak with young people, crofters, or representatives of the Unst Community Council during our visit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaxaVord Spaceport was invited to take part in the study but chose not to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report said residents in Unst gave two examples to support their opinions: \u00b7<\/p>\n<p>suspension of construction work at the SaxaVord construction site in August 2023 \u00b7<br \/>\nand an explosion during the test of a rocket engine in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Both were highly visible incidents raising concerns for local people, but over which there had been no direct communication with the Unst community from the spaceport management.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceWatch UK continued by saying that during a recent visit by the UK Parliament\u2019s Scottish Affairs Committee, committee chair Patricia Ferguson praised the spaceport\u2019s community outreach work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"row-text sign-in-message\">Already a member? <a href=\"https:\/\/account.shetnews.co.uk\/?redirect_to=https:\/\/www.shetnews.co.uk\/2025\/09\/22\/campaign-group-critical-spaceports-engagement\/\" title=\"Sign in\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign in<\/a> to hide this message.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It said she stated that \u201cengagement with the community was also very impressive\u201d solely on the basis of claims made by the spaceport itself.<\/p>\n<p>Burt said the spaceport\u2019s communications with islanders and the public now seemed to be largely through occasional press releases and Facebook, and added that Unst residents feel that this is because spaceport managers would not like what they would be told at open community meetings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople on Unst are supportive of the SaxaVord Spaceport and are anticipating the first launch from the site, but there is a deep undercurrent of concern that the spaceport is keeping its distance from the community and is reluctant to speak to local people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaxaVord Spaceport do need to improve their game, and they could do this easily by taking some relatively simple steps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe local people we spoke to expressed a strong preference for community meetings and events as a means of dialogue with the spaceport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But local councillor Ryan Thomson said the overwhelming feeling in the community is one of support for the spaceport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving spoken to constituents and while there is always an exception to the rule, there remains optimism about the potential of the project locally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe negative aspects from the report is not something I recognise nor am I getting fed back from the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Registered in Dorset, SpaceWatch UK is a project of Drone Wars UK, and describes itself as campaigning for a \u201cpeaceful and just world where governments prioritise investment in human and environmental security\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Seen as \u201canti-space\u201d by the wider industry, SaxaVord Spaceport declined to engage with the group\u2019s investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The full report can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/spacewatch.uk\/uk-space-expansion-benefits-for-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shetland News is asking its readers to consider paying for membership to get additional perks:<\/p>\n<p>Removal of third-party ads;<br \/>\nBookmark posts to read later;<br \/>\nExclusive curated weekly newsletter;<br \/>\nHide membership messages;<br \/>\nComments open for discussion.<\/p>\n<p>If you appreciate what we do and feel strongly about impartial local journalism, then please become a member of Shetland News by either making a single payment, or setting up a monthly, quarterly or yearly subscription.<\/p>\n<p class=\"row-text sign-in-message\">Already a member?
