{"id":154868,"date":"2025-09-23T07:34:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T07:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/154868\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T07:34:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T07:34:13","slug":"deconstructed-barns-become-pavilion-at-copenhagen-architecture-biennial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/154868\/","title":{"rendered":"Deconstructed barns become pavilion at Copenhagen Architecture Biennial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Weathered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/wood\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wood<\/a> salvaged from disused farm buildings has been repurposed in Barn Again, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/pavilions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pavilion<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/copenhagen-architecture-biennial\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Copenhagen Architecture Biennial<\/a> designed and built by British practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/thiss-studio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">THISS Studio<\/a> and architectural designer Tom Svilans.<\/p>\n<p>Located at Gammel Strand in the Danish capital, the pavilion was built from reclaimed wood from disused barns and landfill sites in Norway, which would otherwise have been burned.<\/p>\n<p>It was designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thiss.studio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">THISS Studio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tomsvilans.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Svilans<\/a> to serve as a meditative space for the public that doubles as an opportunity to showcase the potential of reclaimed materials.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249911 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/copenhagen-architecture-biennial-barn-again-pavilion-thiss-studio-thomas-svilans-reclaimed-wood_deze.jpeg\" alt=\"Barn Again at Copenhagen Architecture Biennial by THISS Studio and Tom Svilans\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1913\"  \/>Barn Again is one of two Slow Pavilions at Copenhagen Architecture Biennial<\/p>\n<p>Barn Again is one of two pavilions at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafx.dk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Copenhagen Architecture Biennial<\/a> selected through its Slow Pavilions open call, which invited structures designed in response to its theme Slow Down.<\/p>\n<p>The other pavilion is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/18\/slaatto-morsbol-copenhagen-architecture-biennial-pavilion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Inside Out, Downside Up by architecture studio Slaatto Morsb\u00f8l<\/a>, which was also built of reclaimed materials, including perforated bricks.<\/p>\n<p>For Barn Again, the goal of THISS Studio and Svilans was to highlight the abundance of existing materials in the world today and their structural and aesthetic potential in architecture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249913 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758612849_653_copenhagen-architecture-biennial-barn-again-pavilion-thiss-studio-thomas-svilans-reclaimed-wood_deze.jpeg\" alt=\"Timber pavilion\" width=\"1810\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It is built from wood salvaged from disused barns<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The building materials that we need to build now already exist, and we need to find them and work with them,&#8221; said THISS Studio co-founder Tamsin Hanke.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me, this has been the prevailing message,&#8221; she told Dezeen during the opening of the pavilion.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249900 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758612850_988_copenhagen-architecture-biennial-barn-again-pavilion-thiss-studio-thomas-svilans-reclaimed-wood_deze.jpeg\" alt=\"Barn Again at Copenhagen Architecture Biennial by THISS Studio and Tom Svilans\" width=\"1813\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The textured boards are arranged as a cocooning, stepped form<\/p>\n<p>The reclaimed wood boards used for the structure are each heavily textured, marked by both weathering and human activity during their previous lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;ll see markings from when they were originally made with what they call the carpenter&#8217;s marks, and all sorts of little details that tell their story from who knows what past they&#8217;ve had,&#8221; added Svilans.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/18\/slaatto-morsbol-copenhagen-architecture-biennial-pavilion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/slow-pavilion-inside-out-upside-down-slaatto-morsbol-copenhagen-architecture-biennial_dezeen_2364_sq.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Inside Out, Downside Up pavilion by Slaatto Morsb\u00f8l\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Reclaimed materials shape Copenhagen Architecture Biennial pavilion by Slaatto Morsb\u00f8l\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Their textured look is enhanced by their stepped, overlapping arrangement, which steps up to form a tunnelling roof.<\/p>\n<p>Barn Again&#8217;s form emulates the way that the wood was delivered from Norway \u2013 stacked and layered on palettes \u2013 and was designed to feel like a cocooning environment in which passersby can find respite from the bustle of the city.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249910 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758612852_944_copenhagen-architecture-biennial-barn-again-pavilion-thiss-studio-thomas-svilans-reclaimed-wood_deze.jpeg\" alt=\"Pavilion made from reclaimed wood\" width=\"1743\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Spatially, it provides a meditative space for passersby<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Spatially, it will feel like a real moment of pause to the city, because you&#8217;re surrounded by all this timber, all this history,&#8221; concluded THISS Studio co-founder Sash Scott.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be a very, very calming space. It&#8217;s going to smell great, it&#8217;s going to feel great,&#8221; Scott continued. &#8220;I really hope that the public will come and they will meditate on the lifespan of those individual pieces of timber.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After the biennial, the pavilion will be dismantled and repurposed elsewhere \u2013 though the exact site is yet to be determined. THISS Studio described this as &#8220;a temporary interruption in the supply chain&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is just a storage until it goes through to its next site,&#8221; said Hanke.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2249903 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758612853_436_copenhagen-architecture-biennial-barn-again-pavilion-thiss-studio-thomas-svilans-reclaimed-wood_deze.jpeg\" alt=\"THISS Studio and Tom Svilans\" width=\"1770\" height=\"2364\"  \/>THISS Studio and Tom Svilans (above) hope to showcase the potential of existing materials<\/p>\n<p>Dezeen is a media partner for Copenhagen Architecture Biennial, which takes place across the Danish Capital until 19 October 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural event is being run by the Copenhagen Architecture Foundation (CAFx) and directed by Josephine Michau, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/18\/time-for-activism-copenhagen-architecture-biennial\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who told Dezeen that the goal is to offer solutions to the global challenges<\/a> exacerbated by the built environment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s time for activism,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I see ourselves as maybe more &#8216;soft activists&#8217;, but we really want to push for change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other pavilions recently featured on Dezeen include a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/17\/roo-dhissou-cob-house-mud-hs2-excavation-sites\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> cob structure inside the V&amp;A made from mud from an HS2 excavation site<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/08\/mitcham-fair-green-bandstand-charles-holland-raskl\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a colourful bandstand by Charles Holland and RASKL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The photography is by Maja Flink.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/eventsguide\/2025\/09\/copenhagen-architecture-biennial-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Copenhagen Architecture Biennial<\/a> runs from 18 September to 19 October 2025.
