Another fire on NordSpace’s\u00a0launch pad\u00a0has further delayed a planned\u00a0rocket launch on Newfoundland’s south coast.<\/p>\n
The company\u00a0had eyed Wednesday for the possibility of finally getting its rocket into the air, but an anomaly on the launch pad resulted in a minor fire, according to the NordSpace website.<\/p>\n
The company said it’s\u00a0now lookat at Thursday.<\/p>\n
NordSpace’s launch window was between\u00a03 p.m. and\u00a07 p.m on Wednesday. An update on the company’s\u00a0website said clear conditions in the latter half of the afternoon made a launch more likely.<\/p>\n
A CBC News reporter on site noted the launch pad had\u00a0been cleared, and drones are in the air ahead of an attempted launch.<\/p>\n
It’s all in an attempt to launch a\u00a0single-engine rocket \u2014\u00a0Taiga \u2014\u00a0in St. Lawrence, N.L. and become the first\u00a0to launch a commercial rocket in Canada. Taiga\u00a0is a six-metre tall rocket created using 3D-printed metal.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the company had been preparing to launch on Wednesday morning,\u00a0but shortly\u00a0before 11 a.m. NT said the attempt would likely happen in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
“Minimum ceiling is about 5,000 [feet.] Keep in mind that many of these restrictions will not be in place for our orbital vehicles. We can launch with almost no visibility and higher winds, as many do,” NordSpace\u00a0said in a comment in its livestream.<\/p>\n
In a statement on its website,\u00a0around 5:30 a.m.,\u00a0NordSpace said\u00a0both the pad and rocket were launch-ready.<\/p>\n
Wednesday’s launch window opened at 6:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, NordSpace made two attempts<\/a>\u00a0to launch the\u00a0rocket. The first was\u00a0called off because a small boat appeared in the ocean near the launch area.<\/p>\n When cleared for another attempt, the mission was a go for launch until about 30 seconds before the timer reached zero. However, smoke and fire became visible near the bottom of the rocket, forcing a pause on the mission.<\/p>\n NordSpace CEO Rahul Goel said the flames came from residual propellant on the launch pad, and that a fire in that manner isn’t uncommon for rocket launches.<\/p>\n NordSpace\u00a0also\u00a0attempted several launches in late August, and was 58 seconds away from takeoff when an ignition issue occurred and the mission was scrubbed.<\/p>\n The launch \u2014 when it\u00a0happens \u2014 will be suborbital, meaning the rocket won’t orbit Earth and will only be in the air for about a minute before it splashes into the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n Download our\u00a0free CBC News app<\/a>\u00a0to sign up for push alerts for CBC Newfoundland and Labrador.
