{"id":158935,"date":"2025-09-25T05:29:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T05:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/158935\/"},"modified":"2025-09-25T05:29:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T05:29:09","slug":"basking-sharks-captured-on-video-off-nairn-in-rare-sighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/158935\/","title":{"rendered":"Basking sharks captured on video off Nairn in rare sighting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nairn\u2019s coastline has once again provided the backdrop to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverness-courier.co.uk\/news\/watch-close-encounter-for-paddle-boarder-as-basking-shark-v-323195\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another remarkable wildlife sighting<\/a>, with basking sharks spotted swimming just offshore.<\/p>\n<p>One lucky visitor, Tracy O\u2019Hagan from Glasgow, caught a close-up glimpse during a dolphin-watching trip on August 30. Her video captures the huge fish breaking the surface and circling near the boat &#8211; a rare close-up view of the ocean\u2019s elusive giants.<\/p>\n<p>Tracy said: \u201cWe booked a dolphin spotting trip with Dolphin spirit and we were out on the RHIB boat when we came across 10 basking sharks just off Nairn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one in the video was the biggest and approached the boat on its own. We were sitting with engines turned off watching them for around 30 mins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Basking sharks are the world\u2019s second-largest fish, reaching lengths of up to twelve metres. Despite their size, they are harmless filter-feeders, relying on seasonal plankton blooms which often draw them closer to shore in late summer and early autumn.<\/p>\n<p>Tracy\u2019s footage was not the only one to emerge &#8211; several Nairn residents and visitors on paddleboards, small boats, and even from the beach also recorded their encounters, sharing videos of the sharks basking calmly in the still waters.<\/p>\n<p>    Do you want to respond to this article?
