at slashing risk of cancer, study reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-3963\/elen-johnston.html\" class=\"author\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ELEN JOHNSTON, HEALTH REPORTER<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  12:25 EDT, 25 September 2025   |  Updated:  12:26 EDT, 25 September 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Taking a low dose of aspirin every day could help slash the risk of developing <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/cancer\/index.html\" id=\"mol-3c18d650-9a2a-11f0-a890-354087275fd4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cancer<\/a>, a study has suggested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Aspirin, which is found in most medicine cabinets, is a painkiller used to treat a variety of aches and pains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Previous studies have <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.annalsofoncology.org\/article\/S0923-7534(19)38735-6\/fulltext\">shown\u00a0<\/a>the medicine\u2014which can cost as little as 3p a pill\u2014can <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-15107709\/Cheap-tablet-millions-medicine-cabinets-fights-bowel-cancer-scientists-discover.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lower the risk of colon cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Now, Australian researchers who tracked almost 10,000 adults over five years, have discovered those\u00a0taking a low dose of the drug had a 15 per cent lower risk of developing cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The participants were aged between 71 and 77 at the start of the study, and 53.7 per cent were female.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They either took 100mg of aspirin per day, or a placebo tablet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Researchers found aspirin was more likely to prevent cancer in people at the older end of the age range, who did not smoke, had a lower BMI, and had a family history of cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Many in this group also had a condition known medically as clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP)\u2014when someone has blood cell mutations as they age that raises their risk of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-cdec2de6f50df3dc\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/102449987-15133489-image-a-1_1758811661927.jpg\" height=\"404\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Promising research has found a low daily dose of aspirin can lower cancer risk in some people\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Promising research has found a low daily dose of aspirin can lower cancer risk in some people<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They found having CHIP in 10 per cent of blood cells was the strongest predictor that a low dose of daily aspirin could lower the risk of cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Writing in the journal <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaoncology\/article-abstract\/2839160\">JAMA Oncology<\/a>, the researchers said the findings suggest CHIP may &#8216;play a vital role&#8217; in influencing how effective aspirin is, potentially through how it affects the body&#8217;s &#8216;inflammatory pathways&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, they acknowledged that further research was vital to proving if aspirin could prevent cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They also noted the study had several limitations, including the fact it included &#8216;relatively healthy older white adults in Australia&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Previous studies suggest that initiation of aspirin use at earlier ages may have differential benefits on long-term cancer risk compared with at older ages,&#8217;
