{"id":161302,"date":"2025-09-26T09:40:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T09:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/161302\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T09:40:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T09:40:19","slug":"king-cobra-among-dangerous-wild-animals-living-in-oxfordshire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/161302\/","title":{"rendered":"King cobra among dangerous wild animals living in Oxfordshire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  International wildlife charity Born Free recently revealed there are more than 2,700\u202fdangerous wild animals being kept privately (with a licence) in the UK and Northern Ireland.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  There could be more living in the UK that are being kept without a licence.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bornfree.org.uk\/dwamap\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Born Free<\/a> survey, conducted back in 2023, revealed \u201ca total of 187\u202fprivate addresses across 126\u202flocal authorities hold licences to keep dangerous wild animals such as lions, tigers, crocodiles and venomous reptiles\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n    \ud83d\udeab Wild animals don\u2019t belong in living rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Born Free, OneKind &amp; Scottish SPCA are urging <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/scotgov?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@scotgov<\/a> to introduce a permitted species list for pets in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\ude4c Over 11,000 have signed the petition, please add your name today!<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd17 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5TFh22AdDr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/5TFh22AdDr<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ysjvjq6qFN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/Ysjvjq6qFN<\/a>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    \u2014 Born Free Foundation (@BornFreeFDN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BornFreeFDN\/status\/1969811887903674686?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">September 21, 2025<\/a>\n  <\/p>\n<p>  The dangerous wild animals living in Oxfordshire<\/p>\n<p>\n  Oxfordshire, which is broken down to west Oxfordshire, was among the areas in Britain where dangerous wild animals can be found.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Born Free survey showed there are 140 dangerous wild animals living in the area, including red kangaroos, wolves, tigers and more.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Here is the full list of dangerous wild animals living in west Oxfordshire, according to Born Free:\n<\/p>\n<p>Wild boar \u2013 75<\/p>\n<p>  Lion \u2013 6<\/p>\n<p>  Tiger \u2013 4<\/p>\n<p>  Leopard \u2013 4<\/p>\n<p>  Wolf \u2013 5<\/p>\n<p>  Morelet\u2019s crocodile \u2013 2<\/p>\n<p>  Cuvier\u2019s dwarf caiman \u2013 1<\/p>\n<p>  Alligator \u2013 1<\/p>\n<p>  Beaded lizard \u2013 2<\/p>\n<p>  Gila monster \u2013 1<\/p>\n<p>  Cobra \u2013 1<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>There are four zebras known to be living in west Oxfordshire(Image: Getty)\n<\/p>\n<p>Dromedary camel \u2013 2<\/p>\n<p>  Bactrian camel \u2013 4<\/p>\n<p>  Zebra \u2013 4<\/p>\n<p>  Pygmy hippo \u2013 2<\/p>\n<p>  Rhesus monkey \u2013 8<\/p>\n<p>  Ring-tailed lemur \u2013 10<\/p>\n<p>  Red kangaroo \u2013 8<\/p>\n<p>\n  You can see all the dangerous wild animals living in Britain, and where they are located, on the Born Free website (linked above).\n<\/p>\n<p>  The world&#8217;s most venomous snake that can be found living in Oxfordshire<\/p>\n<p>\n  King cobras are among the most venomous snakes in the world, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/reptiles\/facts\/king-cobra?ref=ed_direct?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Geographic<\/a>, and are one of the dangerous wild animals that call Oxfordshire home.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They can grow up to 18 feet in length (the longest type of venomous snake), and they have an average life span of around 20 years when living in the wild.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  King cobras can weigh up to 20 pounds, and they \u201cusually live in the rainforests and plains of India, southern China, and Southeast Asia.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>  Native wild animals in the UK<\/p>\n<p>\n  National Geographic adds: &#8220;The king cobra\u2014one of the most venomous snakes on the planet\u2014can literally &#8220;stand up&#8221; and look a full-grown person in the eye.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;When confronted, they can lift up to a third of its body off the ground and still move forward to attack.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Recommended reading:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Fortunately, king cobras are shy and will avoid humans whenever possible.
