The moon is typically <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/moon\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/moon\/facts\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">239,000 miles (385,000 km) away from the Earth<\/a>, but its orbit is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanscientist.org\/article\/the-orbit-of-the-moon\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.americanscientist.org\/article\/the-orbit-of-the-moon\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not a perfect circle<\/a> and changes by about 12,400 miles (20,000 km) as it orbits the Earth. This change is why some full moons are a bit bigger than others; these are <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/supermoons-are-big-and-bright-but-not-as-rare-as-the-hype-would-suggest-68270\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/supermoons-are-big-and-bright-but-not-as-rare-as-the-hype-would-suggest-68270\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">called supermoons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/astrokerby.altervista.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/astrokerby.altervista.org\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">As an astrophysics researcher<\/a>, I&#8217;m interested in the motion and interaction of objects such as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17028-terrestrial-planets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17028-terrestrial-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">planets<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15680-galaxies.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15680-galaxies.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">galaxies<\/a>. The motions of the Earth and moon have many interesting consequences, and studying how they move over time can help researchers better understand how each has changed over the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24854-how-old-is-earth.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24854-how-old-is-earth.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4\u00bd billion years<\/a> since the Earth and Moon formed.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-efc7d547-a349-4bd1-9706-c14e2bd47fa7\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Tidal forces<\/p>\n<p id=\"cc3a70cd-f5e4-4169-a164-77136c3e8424\">So, why is the moon getting farther away? It&#8217;s all because of tides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tides<\/a> come from a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/tides.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/tides.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">difference in gravity<\/a> across an object. The force of gravity exerted by the moon is about 4% stronger on the side of Earth that faces toward the moon, compared to the opposite side of the Earth facing away, because gravity gets weaker with distance.<\/p>\n<p>This tidal force causes the oceans to slosh around in two bulges that point toward and away from the moon. They do this because the gravitational force pulling on Earth by the moon isn&#8217;t just an average force that&#8217;s the same strength everywhere. The moon&#8217;s gravity is strongest on the closer side of the Earth, creating a bulge of water pointing toward the moon. It&#8217;s weaker on the opposite side of the Earth, which leaves another bulge of water that lags behind the rest of the Earth.<\/p>\n<p>As the Earth rotates, these bulges move around and keep pointing at the moon because of its gravitational pull. In New York City or Los Angeles, the water level can change by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tide-forecast.com\/locations\/New-York-New-York\/tides\/latest\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.tide-forecast.com\/locations\/New-York-New-York\/tides\/latest\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">about 5 feet<\/a> due to these tidal bulges.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>These liquid bulges do not quite line up with the moon \u2013 they &#8220;lead&#8221; it a little bit because the Earth is rotating and dragging them forward. These bulges also exert a gravitational pull back on the moon. The bulge closer to the moon isn&#8217;t just pulling the moon toward the center of the Earth, but also a little bit ahead in its orbit \u2013 like the boost a sports car gets as it goes around a curve.<\/p>\n<p>This forward pull from the closer tidal bulge causes the moon to speed up, which causes <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pJHluGiM5X4\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pJHluGiM5X4\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the size of its orbit<\/a> to increase. Think of a baseball player hitting a home run. If the player hits the ball faster at home plate, it&#8217;ll zoom higher up into the sky.<\/p>\n<p>So the bottom line is that the gravity of the closer tidal bulge on the Earth is pulling the moon forward, which increases the size of the moon&#8217;s orbit. This means that the moon gets slightly farther away from the Earth. Think about spinning a weight attached to a string. The longer the string, the more momentum the weight has, and the harder it is to stop.<\/p>\n<p>Because the Earth is doing the work of increasing the moon&#8217;s momentum, the Earth&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M6PuutIm5h4\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M6PuutIm5h4\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rotation slows down<\/a> in turn, as its momentum goes to the moon. To put it another way, as the moon&#8217;s orbital momentum increases, the Earth&#8217;s rotational momentum decreases in exchange. This exchange makes a day get very slightly longer.<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t worry, these effects are so small: 1.5 inches per year compared to a distance of 239,000 miles (384,000 km) is just 0.00000001% per year. We&#8217;ll keep having <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/solar-eclipses-result-from-a-fantastic-celestial-coincidence-of-scale-and-distance-224113\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/solar-eclipses-result-from-a-fantastic-celestial-coincidence-of-scale-and-distance-224113\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eclipses<\/a>, tides and days that last 24 hours for millions of years.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-7491ad70-69be-403d-ba55-68e80c14044c\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Was the Moon closer to us in the past?<\/p>\n<p id=\"c78d94f0-4e35-4b43-8cb6-ed991f78f120\">The Earth&#8217;s days were shorter in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-moon-might-be-older-than-scientists-previously-thought-a-new-study-shines-light-on-its-history-246085\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-moon-might-be-older-than-scientists-previously-thought-a-new-study-shines-light-on-its-history-246085\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Moon probably formed<\/a> around 4.5 billion years ago, when a young Earth was hit by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/moon\/formation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/moon\/formation\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a Mars-size protoplanet<\/a>, causing a lot of material to get knocked off into space.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, that material formed the moon, and it was initially much closer to the Earth. Back then, you&#8217;d see the moon much bigger in the sky.<\/p>\n<p>By examining fossilized clam shells for material showing their daily growth patterns, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2019PA003723\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2019PA003723\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">paleontologists found evidence that 70 million years ago<\/a> \u2013 near the end of the time of dinosaurs \u2013 the day was only 23.5 hours long, just as predicted by astronomical data.<\/p>\n<p>New Supercomputer Simulation Sheds Light on Moon\u2019s Origin &#8211; YouTube<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758928870_65_maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"New Supercomputer Simulation Sheds Light on Moon\u2019s Origin - YouTube\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"watch-on-youtube-kRlhlCWplqk\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kRlhlCWplqk\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kRlhlCWplqk\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Watch On <\/a><br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-81fe1091-c5d4-4fab-b387-379799bc202f\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What will happen in the future?<\/p>\n<p id=\"3c2e1cdb-0283-4c94-a4a8-657c1d0c16f9\">So, will the moon eventually escape from the Earth&#8217;s gravitational pull as it moves away?<\/p>\n<p>If we fast-forward tens of billions of years into the future, eventually the Earth&#8217;s rotation could slow down until it is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/moon\/tidal-locking\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/moon\/tidal-locking\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tidally locked<\/a> with the moon. That means that it would take just as long for the Earth to rotate as the moon does to orbit. First, in a billion years or so, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/14732-sun-burns-star-death.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/14732-sun-burns-star-death.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sun will get brighter<\/a> and boil away the oceans. Then, there won\u2019t be large tidal bulges of water to cause the Moon to get more distant. A few billion years later, the Sun will expand into <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22471-red-giant-stars.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22471-red-giant-stars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a red giant<\/a>, probably destroying the Earth and the moon.<\/p>\n<p>But these events are so far in the future that you don\u2019t need to worry about them.
