It’s a gym debate that’s been raging for decades. Some say heavy loads are the only way to build real size, while others swear that light weights and higher reps are the way for bigger gains. Jeremy Ethier, a fitness YouTuber and trainer, decided to put the theory to the test – on his own body.

‘For the next 60 days, I’ll be training half my body with light weights and the other half with heavy weights,’ he explained at the start of the challenge. After 60 days the differences between sides were noticeable.

@jeremyethier//YouTube

Day 1: The Methods

After a coin toss decided his plan of action, his weaker, non-dominant left side would handle the heavy loads, while his right would take the lighter, high rep work. ‘The science gods must be looking out for me because my left side is actually my weaker non-dominant arm and leg. So the heavy weights might actually balance them out,’ he said.

What to read next

After getting started, Ethier admitted, ‘The burn on that side is way more intense, like the first 10 it was easy. Once I got to like 12, 15. I’m just not used to that. Pump feels a lot bigger.’ The heavy side, meanwhile, brought fewer reps, quicker fatigue, and no soreness. When he tracked his workload, the difference was notable.

‘On my light side [week one] came up to a total of over ten thousand pounds. On the heavy side, because I’m doing far less reps, it actually came up to just half that,’ he explained.

Ethier also recruited a guinea pig for the small experiment, a complete beginner with 18.4% body fat and very little muscle. His right side was assigned to light weights, mirroring Ethier’s own setup. For Dennis, the beginner, even bodyweight movements were a challenge at first. Still, Ethier was confident he could add a few pounds of muscle in two months. Beginners typically make faster progress if they can stick with the plan, this is often referred to as ‘newbie gains’.

@jeremyethier//YouTube

Day 30: The Midway Mark

By the halfway mark, the differences between training styles were becoming more obvious. Ethier’s heavy side grew stronger but also took a toll on his joints. ‘I felt like a little bit of sharp pain right at the top of the knee,’ he said.

The light side, on the other hand, demanded more perceived effort. ‘With heavy weights, big fibres are activated right from the very first rep. But with light weights, they sit on the sidelines until the smaller ones fatigue. And the problem is by the time you’re 15 plus reps deep, most people can’t push through the pain and just stop their sets,’ he explained.

Ethier found the endless burn tiring, while his beginner counterpart’s form began to slip as he chased numbers. Both lifters were learning that consistency and technique mattered more than load.

@jeremyethier//YouTube

Day 60: The Results

At the end of 60 days, both participants put each side to the test. Unsurprisingly, Ethier’s heavy side excelled at low-rep strength, while his light side showed better muscular endurance at higher reps. ‘This guy got more endurance. This guy got more strength. Each side got stronger in their own way, which makes sense,’ he said.

The beginner’s results followed the same pattern. His heavy side was stronger on one-rep moves, but his light side had the stamina for longer sets.

‘My lighter weight side grew just very slightly more in almost every single muscle’

Ethier gained around two pounds, with just over half a pound of actual muscle. ‘My lighter weight side grew just very slightly more in almost every single muscle. My chest actually had the biggest difference, with the light side experiencing double the growth. Honestly though, the absolute difference for every muscle was tiny, sometimes as little as 15 grams. That’s nowhere near statistically significant,’ he explained.

@jeremyethier//YouTube

Broken down by muscle group, in terms of size, the light side consistently had the edge:

Chest: heavy +3.91% vs light +7.82%Quads: heavy +1.89% vs light +2.36%Glutes: heavy +0.20% vs light +1.18%Calves: heavy +3.62% vs light +5.67%

His chest saw the biggest gap, with the light side experiencing nearly double the growth. Still, the differences across all muscles were small, sometimes as little as a few grams of tissue.

Dennis had more dramatic changes of roughly three pounds of lean mass gained and a drop in body fat from 18.4% to 17.8%. ‘Every muscle on Dennis trended toward the lighter side growing just slightly more. But again, the difference was tiny and nowhere near statistical significance. So while there was the smallest trend toward the lighter side as a scientist I’d have to call it even,’ Ethier said.

To put the age old question to bed, according to Ethier, the real answer is a bit of both, ‘The range right in between what we tested. So 6 to 15 reps with a moderate weight, that is what I believe is the sweet spot. It’s light enough that your joints don’t get beat up, but heavy enough that every set doesn’t feel like a mental battle.’ He concluded: ‘How much weight you use matters far less than how much effort you put in and the form that you’re using.’

When it comes to building muscle, two principles are key: mechanical tension (the force generated through resistance) and progressive overload, the principle of gradually increasing that load over time. In the end, the lighter side had the edge because the extra reps added up to more total volume moved.

Related Stories

Should you go heavy with fewer reps, or light with higher reps?
