Deontay Wilder<\/a>\u2019s former boxing coach has told Wayne Rooney<\/a> that a fight with his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo<\/a> would be a \u2018global event\u2019.<\/p>\n Rooney and Ronaldo played football together for Manchester United<\/a> but Malik Scott would love to see the two men step into the ring for a bout.<\/p>\n Ronaldo, 40, is still playing for Saudi side Al-Nassr while Rooney, 39, has hung up his boots and is working as a pundit after a spell in management.<\/p>\n Rooney is known to be a huge boxing fan and the same is true for Ronaldo, who admitted in 2020 he\u2019d rather watch combat sports than football on TV.<\/p>\n Celebrity boxing events have been gathering a lot of attention over the last few years and Scott feels Rooney vs Ronaldo would be great for the sport.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tGet personalised updates on Manchester United every day\t\t\t<\/p>\n Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro\u2019s Football Newsletter. <\/p>\n Sign up to our newsletter<\/a> and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. <\/p>\n \u2018Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Wayne Rooney would bring more eyes to boxing, and I\u2019m all for it,\u2019 Wilder\u2019s former boxing coach Scott told CanadaCasino<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2018Any time boxing gets more attention, it\u2019s a good thing. I want people to enjoy the spectacle, not just critique it.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Just enjoy the carnival. It would be a global event because these are high-level names that would draw huge numbers.\u2019<\/p>\n Rooney and Ronaldo famously clashed during the World Cup in 2006, when the latter player was accused of influencing Rooney\u2019s red card during a quarter-final tie against England that was eventually won on penalties by Portugal.<\/p>\n But Rooney recently held out an olive branch to Ronaldo after years of verbal sparring between the former teammates.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018People think I hate him (Ronaldo),\u2019 Rooney said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast<\/a> earlier this week.<\/p>\n \u2018I love him. I think he\u2019s an absolute genius and what he\u2019s doing is incredible.<\/p>\n \u2018I love Cristiano and playing with him. I don\u2019t think people realise actually how close me and him were.<\/p>\n \u2018I think just because I\u2019ve said that I think [Lionel] Messi is better than Ronaldo, people think I don\u2019t like Cristiano.<\/p>\n \u2018I absolutely love Messi, love watching him play and that was the only reason because I think Messi had a little bit more in terms of how he played and taking players on and whatever.<\/p>\n \u2018Ronaldo\u2019s a killer and people think because I\u2019ve said Messi is better than Ronaldo, I don\u2019t like him or speak down on him.\u2019<\/p>\n Ronaldo and Rooney played together at United for five years between 2004 and 2009, helping Sir Alex Ferguson\u2019s team to three Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Rooney was recently called out for a boxing match<\/a> by former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.<\/p>\n Arrow Arrow Arrow![\"Manchester](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-75925578.jpg\")
