{"id":168574,"date":"2025-09-29T17:14:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T17:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/168574\/"},"modified":"2025-09-29T17:14:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T17:14:10","slug":"amazons-ai-assistant-is-smarter-but-still-struggles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/168574\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon\u2019s AI assistant is smarter, but still struggles."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy2 _17nnmdy0 _17nnmdy7 _17nnmdy5 _1xwtict1 _17nnmdyb\">This week, Amazon will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/786455\/amazon-fall-hardware-event-2025-what-to-expect-alexa-echo-kindle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launch new Echo hardware<\/a> designed to supercharge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/620005\/amazon-alexa-plus-ai-smart-assistant-pricing-availability-devices\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexa Plus<\/a>, the AI-powered upgrade to its voice assistant. I\u2019ve been using Alexa Plus for the last few months as part of its <a rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=206207565011&amp;tag=theverge02-20\" target=\"_blank\">Early Access program<\/a>, and while the new assistant is off to a promising start, it\u2019s still clearly a work in progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">To fix Alexa, Amazon had to break it apart and rebuild it. The result is a hybrid smart home assistant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/hands-on\/710035\/amazon-alexa-plus-ai-agent-features-hands-on\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">personal assistant<\/a>, and Amazon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/hands-on\/705808\/amazon-alexa-plus-first-look\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">answer to ChatGPT<\/a>. Right now, in its Beta phase, this new Alexa isn\u2019t doing any of those things as well as I\u2019d hoped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">This is most obvious in the smart home. Controlling my lights, locks, and robot vacuum with natural language rather than precise phrases is a huge improvement, as is not having to say \u201cAlexa\u201d repeatedly and being able to interrupt, um and er, and change my mind mid-thought. But we are still far from the dream of the ambient home that runs on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24282710\/amazon-alexa-ai-star-trek-computer-10-years-assistant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Star Trek\u2013style \u201cComputer.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Today, running on what feels like underpowered hardware and with surface-level integrations into my smart home, Alexa Plus often leaves me frustrated. There\u2019s power under that hood, but it feels largely inaccessible. The assistant desperately needs something to make it more compelling \u2014 and better hardware could be the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Alexa Plus should make the smart home smarter<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Generative AI is supposed to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/6\/14\/24177991\/apple-intelligence-siri-voice-assistant-amazon-alexa-generative-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">watershed moment for the smart home<\/a>. By cutting through the complexity of programming your home and removing the frustrations of clunky commands, LLMs should make the smart home more accessible. And in many ways, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/amazon-alexa\/622172\/amazon-alexa-plus-panos-panay-interview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alexa Plus delivers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I can now say, \u201cAlexa, dim the lights in here, adjust the thermostat down a few degrees, lock the front door, and turn the upstairs lights off. Oh, and remind me to take the trash out in the morning,\u201d and it all happens. Instead of scrolling through thumbnail clips in the Ring app, I can ask an Echo Show 21 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/10\/9\/24265564\/ring-ai-smart-video-search-security-camera-price-availability\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">when the cat was last on the porch<\/a> and instantly see a full-screen video. The updated UI on the Show 15 and 21 is a big improvement, with larger widgets, customizable layouts, and easier access to smart home controls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Recently, Alexa and I chatted about the best ways to use my smart home gadgets to their full potential. It suggested possible routines, built the automations, tweaked them based on my feedback, and tested them \u2014 all in minutes, with no fiddling in the (still clunky) Alexa app. It even helped me set up a new air purifier and folded it into one of those routines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">But there are issues. Alexa Plus is noticeably slower, with some requests taking up to 15 seconds for a response. While turning on lights or adjusting a thermostat is fast enough (I assume due to using local connections over Matter), waiting for over 10 seconds for the weather or a song to play is tiresome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Some basic features that used to work reliably now don\u2019t or require new phrasing every time. Now, Alexa Plus tells me it has to create a routine to do that, and then doesn\u2019t run that routine. Or it says, \u201cSure,\u201d turns the fan on, but never turns it off. I\u2019ve tried this a dozen times and haven\u2019t had a consistent response yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">One surreal moment: after weeks of Alexa Plus\u2019 new voice, the old Alexa suddenly surfaced when the system hit a snag. \u201cSorry, something went wrong,\u201d it said in that stiff, familiar tone. For a second, I wondered \u2014 is the old Alexa still in there, trying to get out?<\/p>\n<p>Building the old on top of the new<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The old Alexa \u2014 the deterministic model built on rigid command-and-control rules \u2014 is essentially gone. According to Panos Panay, head of Amazon\u2019s devices and service division, whom I spoke with in February, Alexa Plus runs on an entirely new architecture. One that, based on my testing, feels much more powerful than the old Alexa, but also less reliable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">That\u2019s the paradox of LLMs: they\u2019re excellent at parsing human language, but they\u2019re not designed for consistency. Ask ChatGPT the same question twice, and you\u2019ll get different answers. The unpredictability of LLMs, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkingmachines.ai\/blog\/defeating-nondeterminism-in-llm-inference\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nondeterminism<\/a>, is a poor fit for smart home control, where reliability and repeatability are crucial. It\u2019s great when you\u2019re brainstorming, but frustrating when you just want your morning coffee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Amazon\u2019s workaround has been to use <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.amazon.com\/en-US\/blogs\/alexa\/alexa-skills-kit\/2025\/02\/new-alexa-announce-blog?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its LLM models as a kind of translator<\/a>. It interprets what you say, then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/amazon-alexa\/622172\/amazon-alexa-plus-panos-panay-interview#:~:text=Instead%2C%20Amazon%20has%20built%20a%20new%20voice%20assistant%20on%20foundational%20LLMs%2C%20developing%20a%20way%20to%20integrate%20it%20with%20APIs%20to%20give%20LLM%20Alexa%20the%20ability%20to%20do%20everything%20classic%20Alexa%20could.%20This%20structural%20change%20is%20why%20it%20took%20so%20long%2C%20said%20Panay.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hands off the request<\/a> to deterministic systems \u2014 APIs, device controllers, or local Matter connections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup qnnwq2 _1xwtict9\">The unpredictability of LLMs is a poor fit for smart home control, where reliability and repeatability are crucial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I\u2019ve found this works most of the time, but if the LLM translates a request incorrectly or there\u2019s a gap in the API, it appears that handoff can fail. I assume that\u2019s why my bathroom fan sometimes turns on as requested and why Alexa sometimes insists on creating a routine but then forgets to finish the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">This is the problem every company with a voice assistant in the smart home is dealing with \u2014 merging the old and predictable with the new and exciting. LLMs aren\u2019t designed to be predictable, and what you want when controlling your home is predictability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Panay says they\u2019ve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/amazon-alexa\/622172\/amazon-alexa-plus-panos-panay-interview#:~:text=This%20is%20likely,get%20you%20there.%E2%80%9D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worked hard to bring predictability<\/a> to Alexa Plus and to ensure it won\u2019t hallucinate in your smart home. While the former still needs work, so far my smart home has been hallucination-free. There have been no bizarre behaviors such as unlocking doors or cranking up the heat unbidden, or doing something different from what was requested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">However, this tightly controlled structure has resulted in an Alexa Plus that is not the paradigm shift I was hoping for. Of course, it\u2019s still early days, but the promise of LLMs is that they will unlock the potential of technology within our homes \u2014 and that hasn\u2019t happened yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Alexa Plus hasn\u2019t changed anything for me; it\u2019s just made my smart home (mostly) easier to manage. It still feels like pieces and parts, not a cohesive whole being run by an intelligent machine.<\/p>\n<p>Hardware could hold the key<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Many of my frustrations with Alexa Plus are connected to the hardware, and changes here could make a big difference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The current Show devices are the flagship Alexa Plus interfaces, specifically the Show 21 and 15. But the interplay between voice and screen is still lacking; the hardware remains voice-first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">For example, I\u2019ll ask Alexa to show me the recipe I was just using, and instead, it will read out the directions. With hardware that synchronizes voice and visuals seamlessly, Alexa Plus would be very compelling. (Also, the Shows are the worst Echo devices at hearing commands, and Amazon really needs to fix that.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _17nnmdya _1xwtict1\">Andy Jassy has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/621236\/amazon-andy-jassy-beautiful-alexa-hardware\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">promised us \u201cbeautiful\u201d new hardware for Alexa<\/a>. As the first products fully designed under Panos Panay, who told me <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/amazon-alexa\/622172\/amazon-alexa-plus-panos-panay-interview#:~:text=Panay%20told%20The,hardware%20as%20%E2%80%9Cbeautiful.%E2%80%9D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he believes in screens<\/a>, we have some idea of what\u2019s coming. But ultimately, it will be about how well the hardware and software work together.
