St Helens’ Jon Bennison is awarded a try against Leeds Rhinos by the video referee.<\/p>\n
The Rugby Football League match officials department has admitted that a crucial mistake was made in the Super League play-off eliminator between Leeds Rhinos and St Helens.<\/p>\n
In one of the most remarkable finishes to a match in the competition’s history, St Helens advanced to the semi-finals with a wonder try as Shane Wright crossed after the hooter to secure a 16-14 victory.<\/p>\n
However, Saints found themselves in a position to win the game after winger Jon Bennison had a try awarded by the video referee minutes before the end.<\/p>\n
On-field official Jack Smith sent the try up as a ‘no try’ but the video referee deemed there was conclusive evidence that showed Bennison had planted the ball on the line before committing a double movement, subsequently overturning the decision.<\/p>\n
However, All Out Rugby League understands following a review, the department has accepted that there was not sufficient evidence to change the call and the try should not have stood.<\/p>\n
The Rhinos will almost certainly be seething at the developments, with their Grand Final hopes in tatters after the defeat. They were also aggrieved by the decision to rule out a try scored by Ash Handley in the first-half, with St Helens successfully using their captain’s challenge to overturn the decision after claiming Morgan Gannon had obstructed Jonny Lomax.<\/p>\n
That is all immaterial for the Rhinos now, whose season is over in the most dramatic, and now controversial, of circumstances.<\/p>\n
