It\u2019s meant to create more than 50 jobs, provide resources to accelerate AI research and entrepreneurship, and deliver services with a lower energy footprint than other compute facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hypertec and 5C are investing up to $250 million in the development, which will serve as Hypertec\u2019s global headquarters. The company <a href=\"https:\/\/hypertec.com\/hypertec-lance-la-construction-de-son-siege-social-a-lasalle-un-moteur-pour-leconomie-locale-et-linnovation-durable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">broke ground<\/a> on the facility in March, claiming it would create several hundred new jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came during the third annual <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/gomez-bengio-solomon-all-in-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">ALL IN conference<\/a> in Montr\u00e9al, which saw more than 6,000 tech companies, business leaders, researchers, and government officials convene to discuss the Canadian AI industry.<\/p>\n<p>Val\u00e9rie Pisano, president and CEO of Mila, welcomed the news as a win for both researchers and local startups. \u201cDeveloping state-of-the-art compute with less energy and more intelligence is the way forward to scale Canada\u2019s global impact,\u201d she said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio, Mila specializes in deep learning research and has partnerships with several Canadian academic institutions. It recently appointed a <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/new-era-at-mila-as-hugo-larochelle-named-scientific-director\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">new scientific director, Hugo Larochelle,<\/a> who has said that he intends to better support academics in commercializing their research and building companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More from ALL IN 2025<\/p>\n<p>Read BetaKit\u2019s full coverage from ALL IN 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/tag\/all-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hypertec said its new LaSalle campus will provide up to three megawatts (MW) of \u201csecure\u201d AI infrastructure, with graphics processing units (GPUs) from leading chip developers Nvidia, AMD, and Intel. Lab testing at the new AI hub will aim to develop \u201cfrugal AI,\u201d or the best AI application performance for every dollar spent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Traditional data centres provide computing power to store data and run applications. While these require between five and 10 MW of power, one AI \u201chyperscale\u201d data centre typically demands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/commentaries\/what-the-data-centre-and-ai-boom-could-mean-for-the-energy-sector#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">more than 100 MW<\/a>, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Mila, one of three federally backed Canadian AI institutes with more than 1,000 researchers, the new hub is an opportunity to unite its academic efforts with AI computing power\u2014something that academics have said is difficult to procure given high demand from the tech sector.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ised-isde.canada.ca\/site\/ised\/en\/what-we-heard-report-consultations-ai-compute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">federal consultation<\/a>, a majority of AI researchers interviewed said that the demand for public compute infrastructure often exceeds supply and impacts what projects researchers choose to pursue. This isn\u2019t just a challenge in Canada: a Nature survey of academics worldwide showed frustration with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-03792-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">lack of access to compute<\/a> for AI research.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/the-feds-are-all-in-on-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">The feds are ALL IN on AI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1984 in Saint-Laurent, Que., Hypertec builds and operates data centres that offer cloud infrastructure and services to thousands of customers. It spun off Hypertec Cloud and acquired the American company 5C in April, giving it a larger footprint in the United States, with roughly 600 MW of computing capacity through 5C\u2019s existing data centres.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hypertec\u2019s business has grown as companies in Canada and globally have sought to <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/albertas-tech-sector-is-embracing-an-ai-data-centre-boom-will-it-pay-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">build more data centres<\/a> to capture demand for AI services. This summer, the company announced a $5-billion plan to build <a href=\"https:\/\/hypertec.com\/hypertec-expands-into-europe-with-5c-and-together-ai-a-strategic-ai-infrastructure-alliance-driving-up-to-5-billion-in-private-investments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">two gigawatts of AI computing capacity<\/a> in Europe with new data centres. To fuel this buildout, it <a href=\"https:\/\/5c.ai\/news\/5c-group-secures-835-million-of-capital-from-brookfield-and-deutsche-bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">secured more than $1 billion<\/a> in equity and debt financing from Brookfield Asset Management and Deutsche Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The project has support from all three levels of government. Federal AI minister Evan Solomon said the initiative is \u201cadvancing Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/canadian-sovereign-cloud-evan-solomon-all-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">digital sovereignty<\/a>\u201d as the data centre operator is Canadian.
