{"id":170110,"date":"2025-09-30T09:48:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T09:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/170110\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T09:48:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T09:48:15","slug":"schemata-architects-turns-ironworks-into-teshima-factory-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/170110\/","title":{"rendered":"Schemata Architects turns ironworks into Teshima Factory cafe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Japanese studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/schemata-architecture-office\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schemata Architects<\/a> has converted an\u00a0old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/factories\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">factory<\/a> on the island of Teshima into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cafes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cafe<\/a>, swapping its metal walls with polycarbonate that allows light into the building.<\/p>\n<p>Located by the Ieura Port harbour in Japan, the 360-square-metre former ironworks, now known as Teshima Factory, has been divided into two parts \u2013 one containing a cafe and the other a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/breweries\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brewery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252339 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/schemata-architects-teshima-factory_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe with polycarbonate walls\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>A former factory in Teshima has been converted into a cafe<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The original single open-plan space was divided into two sections at the centre,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/schemata.jp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schemata Architects<\/a> told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Functional areas such as the kitchen and brewery were enclosed within boxes and positioned within these sections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252325 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/schemata-architects-teshima-factory_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior of cafe in Japan\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Half the building now has polycarbonate walls<\/p>\n<p>Schemata Architects has added steel braces for structural reinforcement, while half of the original metal elevations have been switched to polycarbonate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By using polycarbonate, light is now drawn into the interior, visually conveying that people are inside, transforming it into a more welcoming space for visitors,&#8221; the studio said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252332 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/schemata-architects-teshima-factory_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of cafe with turquoise walls\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>A turquoise-green colour is used throughout<\/p>\n<p>According to Schemata Architects, which is led by architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/jo-nagasaka\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jo Nagasaka<\/a>, it was important to strike the right balance between keeping the building&#8217;s industrial feel and creating a welcoming space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the cafe&#8217;s programme, it needed to be a comfortable place to dine,&#8221; the studio explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, as the existing structure was a factory, it had an overly stark, industrial feel. Yet, removing that impression entirely would diminish the appeal of the unusual experience of dining within a factory setting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252334 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/schemata-architects-teshima-factory_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe with polycarbonate walls\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Teshima Factory has a lighting installation made from plastic waste<\/p>\n<p>Schemata Architects solved the problem by using tactile materials to create the interior of the space and adding a touch of colour that nods to the original design.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We proceeded with the policy of using warm materials like wood, fabric, and tiles for surfaces people touch \u2013 tables, chairs, sofas, counters, and so on \u2013 while retaining the rough atmosphere in other areas,&#8221; the studio said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At that time, we organised the space using the green colour of the rust-proof coating applied to the existing steel framework as the base tone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/01\/09\/schemata-architects-yawn-yard-okinawa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/schemata-architects-yawn-yard-okinawa-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Yawn Yards by Schemata Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Schemata Architects clads Yawn Yard guesthouses in Japan with local timber\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The studio&#8217;s aim was to create &#8220;a space for communication that leverages the island&#8217;s cyclical agriculture and fishing industries,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>Teshima was once known as &#8220;garbage island&#8221; because industrial waste <a href=\"https:\/\/csens.io\/garbage-island-no-more-how-one-japanese-community-triumphed-over-a-toxic-waste-dump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was illegally dumped there<\/a>, but it is now home to an art museum and has become a cultural hotspot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252333 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/schemata-architects-teshima-factory_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Chairs made by Dutch artist\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Dutch artist Sander Wassink created furniture with the Teshima community<\/p>\n<p>Inside the cafe, the studio has added spherical lighting fixtures that were created from marine plastic waste collected from the ocean surrounding Teshima.<\/p>\n<p>Schemata Architects also commissioned Dutch artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanderwassink.nl\/site\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sander Wassink<\/a> to work with people living on Teshima to create a collection of chairs for the space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252341 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/schemata-architects-teshima-factory_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Brewery in former factory\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Part of the factory is now a brewery<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sander&#8217;s aluminium components have been employed with diverse materials across various projects,&#8221; the studio said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When considering what material would suit Teshima, we concluded that, much like agriculture and fishing, sourcing materials from within the island itself would be ideal,&#8221; it continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Consequently, we decided to collect and utilise reclaimed timber no longer in use on the island.
