He’s 35, viewed as deteriorated and damaged. Moreover, he has only fought twice in the last four years, since 2021.

The skills that Charlo once had in his prime looked gone in his last two fights, against Thomas LaManna and Jose Benavidez Jr. Given how he’s looked in those fights, it’s unclear why he’s ranked so highly at super middleweight. In terms of Jermall’s extinguished, diminished talent level, he’s perfect for Hamzah Sheeraz to pick off for record-padding purposes.

People are naturally skeptical about Hamzah Sheeraz being matched against one of the wolves in the 168-lb division because he resembled a rank amateur getting worked over by Carlos Adames earlier this year in February. Hamzah looked fragile and utterly beatable.

Sheeraz’s predicted Vulnerable Prey

Jermall Charlo
Janibek Alimkhanuly
Jaime Munguia
Diego Pacheco

“Big news to come in the next few weeks. I’m sure boxing fans will love this one,” said Hamzah Sheeraz to Ring Magazine about his next fight.

It would be admirable if Queensberry and Turki Alalshikh were willing to throw the 26-year-old Hamzah Sheeraz in with one of the apex super middleweight contenders. Fans have serious doubts that it will. Unfortunately, Hamzah isn’t being matched against the best like an old-school fighter.

Campbell’s Ringside Take on Sheeraz

The fighter that people least suspect Sheeraz will be fighting is #3 WBC Osleys Iglesias (14-0, 13 KOs), who they view as the boogeyman in the 168-lb division. They believe that Queensberry Hamzah will be protected from Iglesias to prevent the Cuban from exposing him as a manufactured fighter with no real substance.

Who Sheeraz Won’t be Fighting

Sheeraz is too inexperienced and flawed to be matched against any of the talented super middleweights from this list of untouchables:

Osleys Iglesias
Christian Mbilli
Lester Martinez
Diego Pacheco

Those guys are too powerful, talented, and dangerous for the carefully maneuvered Sheeraz to be matched against any of the above fighters.

Although Hamzah won his last fight against Edgar Berlanga, that victory wasn’t indicative of him having improved since his controversial 12-round split draw against Carlos Adames on February 22, 2025. Berlanga was a gimme for Sheeraz.

From my vantage point, Sheeraz will be matched against a safe pick next, someone like Caleb Plant. I don’t see Jermall Charlo getting picked because he’s still powerful despite his inactivity, and we’ve already seen Hamzah staggered by Austin Williams.

The former two-division world champion Jermall doesn’t fit the mold for the type of opponents that Sheeraz has been matched against in his eight-year professional career.

Sheeraz is ranked #2 by the WBC, #2 WBO, #4 WBA, and #6 IBF at super middleweight. He’s coming off a career-best fifth-round knockout win of Edgar Berlanga on July 12, 2025, at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.

Olly Campbell has been covering the boxing world since 2015, delivering sharp ringside analysis and in-depth fight breakdowns with a fan’s passion and a journalist’s eye.

Olly Campbell has been covering boxing since 2010 and has written for Boxing News 24 since 2014.
