That said, if you\u2019re craving popcorn, don\u2019t restrict yourself\u2014go ahead and have some, says Palinski-Wade. Just know that it\u2019ll add up to about 5 grams of net carbs per single cup.  <\/p>\n<p>One cup of popcorn contains about five grams of net carbs.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And what are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19936493\/how-to-calculate-net-carbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19936493\/how-to-calculate-net-carbs\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"net carbs\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">net carbs<\/a>, exactly? \u201cNet carbs are essentially any carbs that are digestible,\u201d Palinski-Wade says. Some carbs, such as those containing fibers and sugars, cannot be digested into the body, so they\u2019re not counted when measuring net carbs. \u201cWe subtract these carbs from total carbs to get the \u2018net carbs,\u2019 or the total digestible carbs in a food,\u201d Palinski-Wade notes. (Yep, this equation is the same for everyone.)   <\/p>\n<p>Is popcorn a low-carb snack?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In moderation, popcorn can be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/g28930570\/best-low-carb-snacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/g28930570\/best-low-carb-snacks\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"low-carb snack\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">low-carb snack<\/a>. Experts recommend consuming about one cup at a time, which has 6 grams of total carbs. Keep in mind that this may be different depending on what kind you buy. (But more on that later!)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Because popcorn is typically pretty fibrous, this means it\u2019s got lower net carbs than other carbohydrate-based foods, Zellner says. And while you might think that it\u2019s pointless to count net carbs instead of regular carbs on keto, you should know that tracking net carbs is actually how you max out on your nutrient intake. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Eating more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a19967218\/foods-high-in-fiber\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a19967218\/foods-high-in-fiber\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"fiber-heavy foods\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fiber-heavy foods<\/a> (like vegetables and fruits, primarily) with lower net carbs will allow you to eat more of those foods, which in turn increases the nutrients you take in and, hopefully, your overall satiety, Zellner says. \u201cIt is important to make sure that you&#8217;re using your carb allowance for as many nutrient-rich veggies and lower sugar fruit as possible. That\u2019s why, sometimes, popcorn may not be the best thing to put into your diet every single day if you\u2019re doing keto,\u201d she adds. But if you\u2019re really craving it, don\u2019t hold back, as that may lead to even more restrictive and bingeing behaviors. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Overall, even if you\u2019re not doing the keto diet, popcorn is a great snack for regular and weight loss-related diets alike, Zellner says. It has nutrients like magnesium (which supports muscle function), phosphorus (which aids bone health), and zinc (good for your metabolism), she explains. It\u2019s also a food you can eat a lot of while still not taking in tons of calories. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That said, you\u2019ll generally want to add some protein or fiber to your popcorn when you eat it. \u201cWe always want to emphasize a fiber, fat, and protein balance for snacks and meals to make sure you\u2019re not spiking the blood sugar and then letting it crash,\u201d Zellner says, which can happen if you eat a carb-dense food with no other nutritional benefits. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"body-tip css-mtq1aa emevuu60\">Try it: You can add more nutrition to your popcorn by sprinkling shredded cheese on top, drizzling some nut butter over it, and mixing in nuts or dried fruits. Whatever makes it more fun for you! <br data-node-id=\"19.2\"\/><\/p>\n<p>What kind of popcorn is the most keto-friendly? <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"> Air-popped popcorn would be the best choice, as it is lower in carbohydrates as well as calories, Palinski-Wade says. \u201cHowever, since grams of fat are not a concern on a keto diet, added oil or butter would still allow this snack to be keto-friendly,\u201d she adds. That said, Palinski-Wade recommends limiting your saturated fats (such as the fats found in butters or oils) to less than 10 percent of your total daily caloric intake. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">You might also want to focus on making your popcorn from scratch with unpopped kernels, Zellner says, as it gives you complete control over the serving size and ingredients. \u201cIt\u2019s easy, it\u2019s quick, it doesn\u2019t take any additional time as you just make it on the stove top,\u201d Zellner says. Regardless of what kind of popcorn you eat, remember to limit your serving to a cup or two.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cAnd for keto specifically, we want to avoid popcorn with any added sugar ingredients like caramel, chocolate drizzle, and the like,\u201d says Zellner. Instead, Zellner recommends adding flavors to your popcorn at home with light butter, ghee, chili lime seasoning, pumpkin spice seasoning, and more. \u201cIt\u2019s really easy to change up the flavor profile,\u201d she notes, if you\u2019re getting bored with one particular taste. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Lastly, when it comes to bagged, microwave popcorn, you might want to steer clear, Zellner says. Why? Well, most microwaveable bags are lined with PFCs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhhs.nh.gov\/dphs\/pfcs\/documents\/pfc-faqs-providers.pdf\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.dhhs.nh.gov\/dphs\/pfcs\/documents\/pfc-faqs-providers.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"perfluorinated compounds\" data-node-id=\"24.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">perfluorinated compounds<\/a>), which prevent grease from leaking out during storage. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4187289\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4187289\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Recent research\" data-node-id=\"24.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Recent research<\/a> has associated PFC with a bunch of negative health risks, such as hormonal disruption, low birth rate, bladder cancer, and more. \u201cWe also know that it bioaccumulates, which means that the more you\u2019re exposed to it, the more it will accumulate in your body and cause potential problems,\u201d Zellner explains. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Stick to air-popped and homemade popcorn, and you should be good to go. Now go pop some kernels and enjoy a lil\u2019 keto-friendly snack.
