Luis Diaz<\/a> had designs on a move to Barcelona<\/a> but Liverpool held firm after contact from the Spanish club, with sporting director Deco describing a deal as \u201cimpossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

As far back as 2023, Diaz\u2019s father made clear his ambition to join Barcelona<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is true that Luis is a loyal Barcelona<\/a> fan and it would be his dream to go there,\u201d Diaz Sr. told Win Sports, while also pledging his commitment to Liverpool.<\/p>\n

The opportunity to move to LaLiga presented itself in the summer, with the No. 7 making clear his desire to leave and the Spanish champions making their approach.<\/p>\n

But Liverpool rebuffed all advances from Barcelona<\/a> and Diaz eventually joined Bayern Munich<\/a> in a deal worth \u00a365.6 million at the end of July.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe lacked that profile in the squad,\u201d Deco explained in an interview with Mundo Deportivo<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuis Diaz<\/a> fit in, [eventual loan signing Marcus] Rashford fit in, and then it\u2019s a matter of negotiation.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the other side, there\u2019s a club, and they\u2019re of a very high level; you\u2019re talking about Liverpool and Man United<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Diaz, Liverpool were pretty tough from the first minute, refusing to sell him, and it\u2019s even more complicated that way, like if they came to us and we didn\u2019t want to put a player on the market.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuis\u2019s move ended up being impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liverpool were right to hold firm on Diaz<\/p>\n

Liverpool\u2019s stance over a move for Diaz paid off as they extracted remarkable value from the sale of a player who will turn 29 in January and had two years remaining on his contract.<\/p>\n

Barcelona<\/a>\u2018s financial restrictions meant their overall spend for the summer totalled \u20ac27 million (\u00a323.6m), with goalkeeper Joan Garcia and young winger Roony Bardghji their only permanent signings.<\/p>\n

Deco explained that negotiations for Rashford \u201cbecame a little easier because United were more open to a loan,\u201d which would never have been the case with Liverpool.<\/p>\n

Rashford has two goals and four assists in eight games so far for Barcelona<\/a>, who can make his switch permanent for a fee of \u20ac35 million next summer.<\/p>\n
