\u201cClimate change is real. But Labour\u2019s laws tied us in red tape, loaded us with costs, and did nothing to cut global emissions,\u201d Badenoch said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Tory leader has long been critical of climate targets. Earlier this year, she announced plans to ditch the U.K.\u2019s legally-binding 2050 net zero target, as first reported by POLITICO<\/a>, branding it \u201cimpossible.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The announcement comes amid a fracturing of political consensus on tackling climate change in the U.K., with Nigel Farage\u2019s populist Reform UK leading national polls and pledging to scrap net zero policies in their entirety.<\/p>\n

The Climate Change Act set out a framework for cutting emissions through five-yearly \u201ccarbon budget\u201d targets on the way to hitting net zero 2050. It also created the U.K. climate watchdog, the Climate Change Committee (CCC), which oversees progress in hitting those goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear whether the CCC would also be scrapped under Conservative plans \u2014 but Shadow Energy Minister Andrew Bowie told POLITICO earlier this year that \u201ceverything\u2019s on the table.\u201d<\/a> He also insisted the party is not \u201cchasing\u201d Reform UK voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Tories have pledged to replace the legislation with a policy which prioritises \u201ccheap and reliable\u201d power. The act is \u201cforcing ministers to adopt policies which are making energy more expensive,\u201d added Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201cClimate change is real.
