US late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert have appeared on one another\u2019s shows in a \u201cfun\u201d format that Kimmel said would \u201cdrive the president nuts\u201d.<\/p>\n
It comes a week after Kimmel, 57, returned to TV screens after his show was suspended over remarks he made in the wake of the assassination of conservative activist and ally of US President Donald Trump, Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n
In his opening monologue, he said: \u201cMy fellow late night host, Stephen Colbert, is here with us.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the show the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) doesn\u2019t want you to see.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re doing something fun tonight. We\u2019re doing something unprecedented tonight. I think it\u2019s unprecedented. I did not bother to check.<\/p>\n
\u201cTonight, Stephen is a guest on our show. I will simultaneously be a guest on his show. We thought it might be a fun way to drive the president nuts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Days after the show was pulled from schedules, Mr Trump claimed Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended because Kimmel \u201cis not a talented person\u201d and had \u201cvery bad ratings\u201d.<\/p>\n
During Tuesday\u2019s show, Colbert talked about CBS cancelling his show, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, which will come to an end next May.<\/p>\n
In July, Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social: \u201cI absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colbert, 61, said he was \u201cso nervous\u201d when he announced the show was ending, \u201cbecause there was nothing in the prompter, I was just speaking off the cuff\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cI f***** up twice and had to restart and the audience thought it was a bit and they started going, \u2018You can do it. Come on, Steve, you can do it\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause I always messed up on the sentence that told them what was happening, and then I got to the sentence that actually told them what was happening, and they didn\u2019t laugh. And then that\u2019s how I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also said that it was \u201cvery emotional\u201d when his team won the Emmy award for outstanding talk series in September.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe got nominated the day before we got cancelled,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
On Colbert\u2019s show, Kimmel said he was in the toilet when he was told his show had been pulled by ABC.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was an emotional rollercoaster, I know you hear that a lot, and it really was. It was very strange,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was about three o\u2019clock. We tape our show at 4.30. I\u2019m in my office typing away, as I usually do, I get a phone call. It\u2019s ABC. They say they want to talk to me. This is unusual.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs far as I knew, they didn\u2019t even know I was doing a show previous to this. So I have a lot of people, I have like five people who work in my office with me, so the only private place to go is the bathroom.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo I go into the bathroom and I\u2019m on the phone with the ABC executives, and they say, \u2018Listen, we want to take the temperature down. We\u2019re concerned about what you\u2019re going to say tonight, and we decided that the best route is to take the show off the air\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brendan Carr, the head of the Federal Communications Commission, issued a warning before Kimmel\u2019s suspension which criticised Kimmel\u2019s remarks about the Kirk assassination.<\/p>\n
