Thousands of older drivers could benefit from free eye tests this September.<\/p>\n
Optical Express, which has a branch in Bolton, is offering complimentary Advanced Eye Tests to people aged 70 and over during National Eye Health Week, taking place until September 28.<\/p>\n
The offer comes as the government considers introducing mandatory vision checks for older drivers, following concerns about road safety.<\/p>\n
Recent RAC figures revealed that UK road deaths rose to 1,633 last year, with nearly 30,000 people killed or seriously injured.<\/p>\n
With nearly six million drivers over the age of 70 still on the road, there are growing calls to prioritise eye health to help keep roads safe.<\/p>\n
Dr Stephen Hannan, clinical services director at Optical Express, said: “Driving with poor eyesight is dangerous \u2013 for the driver, their passengers, and everyone else on the road.<\/p>\n
“With the government now considering tougher rules for over-70s, it\u2019s more important than ever that older motorists take their eye health seriously.<\/p>\n
“Regular vision and health tests should be seen as every bit as essential as an MOT or insurance.<\/p>\n
“This initiative isn\u2019t just about road safety.”<\/p>\n
The Advanced Eye Test goes beyond a standard eye exam, offering more detailed diagnostic checks that can detect early signs of conditions like glaucoma and cataracts.<\/p>\n
These conditions can develop without obvious symptoms but may seriously affect driving ability if left untreated.<\/p>\n
The tests are available at selected Optical Express clinics across the UK, and there is no cap on the number of appointments offered.<\/p>\n

Anyone aged 70 or above can book a test, and Optical Express is encouraging people to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
The company hopes the initiative will help older drivers stay safe on the road while maintaining their independence and mobility.<\/p>\n
