We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/nigeria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nigeria<\/a> has become the latest African country to declare an interest in hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/formula-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Formula 1<\/a> race, with ex-Premier League player Marvin Sordell fronting the bid. <\/p>\n<p>F1 currently hosts a race on every habitable continent apart from Africa, with the last iteration taking place 32 years ago via the 1993 South African Grand Prix at the Kyalami Circuit outside Johannesburg. <\/p>\n<p>Yet now, South Africa (with Kyalami and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/cape-town\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Town<\/a> vying to host), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/f1\/rwanda-f1-grand-prix-race-paul-kagame-fia-b2663972.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rwanda<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/f1\/morocco-f1-race-tangier-africa-grand-prix-b2762900.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Morocco<\/a> have all announced their intention to launch a bid. <\/p>\n<p>Now, Nigeria have joined the list, with Opus Race Promotions eyeing a new circuit in the capital of Abuja, alongside a karting track, hotels and a motorsport museum. <\/p>\n<p>Ex-Burnley and Bolton forward Sordell, who also played for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics, is co-chief executive of the promotional company which has now been officially appointed to negotiate on behalf of the Nigerian government with F1 and the FIA. <\/p>\n<p>A report in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/sport\/formula-one\/article\/formula-1-nigeria-grand-prix-marvin-sordell-50mtk5ssj\">The Times<\/a> states that the bid has \u201cearly support\u201d from the Nigerian government. <\/p>\n<p>F1 chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/stefano-domenicali\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stefano Domenicali<\/a>, who has made it known his desire to host a race once again in Africa, has been invited to visit Abuja to take a look at the project. <\/p>\n<p>Shehu Dikko, chairman of the National Sports Commission in Nigeria, said: \u201cWe are exploring all possibilities to bring Formula 1 to Nigeria as soon as practicable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot just as a sporting event, but as a catalytic driver of tourism, infrastructure development, youth engagement, economy and indeed soft power for Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis vision aligns with the Renewed Hope and Shared Prosperity vision of our president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-148964187.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Marvin Sordell, 34, played for Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Marvin Sordell, 34, played for Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Seven-time world champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/lewis-hamilton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lewis Hamilton<\/a> has previously insisted the sport must make an African grand prix a priority.
