Chamblee also told Sky Sports that he believes another misstep by Team USA could cost them the Ryder Cup. Chamblee doesn’t like the fact that Team USA is getting paid to play in the historic event.<\/p>\n
“Look, I think the US has done a pretty good job of spinning this,” Chamblee told Sky Sports before the event began.<\/p>\n
“They’ve spun it towards philanthropy. Scottie Scheffler said as much.<\/p>\n
“Xander Schauffele spoke, I believe he said he was giving it all to charity. Keegan Bradley said he’s giving it all to charity. But it’s been clear that there was a push on the US side, and where exactly it was coming from is not 100% known, but nonetheless there was a strong push that they wanted to get paid.<\/p>\n
“The story was that $300,000 was meant to be earmarked for charity \u2014 $200,000 of it, which I don\u2019t like calling a stipend because that euphemizes it, is actually a payment to play in the Ryder Cup.<\/p>\n
“For me, the honor of playing in a Ryder Cup is about personal sacrifice and the profound sense of pride that comes from representing your country and in doing so, carrying the hopes of millions of people from your country while embodying the values and spirits of your country on a stage.<\/p>\n
“And asking to be paid for that is unethical to the privilege of playing for your country. I think Europe gets that and I thought that the United States asking to be paid could prove to be such distraction that by end of the week it may well be the reason they lose the Ryder Cup.”<\/p>\n
