It might sound like a scene from a science fiction movie, yet soon, lab-grown hearts could be saving transplant patients. Scientists are even exploring ways to ‘edit’ faulty genes to shield you from inherited heart conditions. As heart diseases are on the rise, the scientists are looking at novel approaches to tackle it. Here’s take a look at how the future of heart care would look like. We have heard of lab-grown diamonds, but what are ‘lab-grown hearts’? This may sound like a scene out of a sci-fi movie, but you might soon hear about lab-grown hearts saving transplant patients. Or scientists ‘editing’ problematic genes to protect you from cardiac diseases that run in your family. “It may sound crazy… but this is the future of heart care,” says Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a leading heart transplant cardiologist from Memphis, United States. “A few years ago, the idea of living with a mechanical heart or using hepatitis C donor organs sounded impossible. Now it’s routine,” he added. The cardiologist has shared some wild, yet very real therapies that may change how we treat heart disease in the next decade. Take a look.

What are the most common tests used to diagnose heart conditions?

Lab-grown hearts

According to Dr. Yaranov, one of the most revolutionary approaches in heart medicine is the development of lab-grown hearts. “Scientists are working on growing heart tissue, and full hearts, from a patient’s own cells,” he said. This could revolutionize organ transplantation, as the chances of the body rejecting the organ is low. This also means no long waitlist to get the organ. “Just… your own heart, rebuilt,” the doctor added, in a video shared on Instagram.Recently, researchers at the University of Galway made a breakthrough in bioprinting functional human heart tissue. “Our research shows that by allowing bioprinted heart tissues to undergo shape-morphing, they start to beat stronger and faster. The limited maturity of bioprinted tissues has been a major challenge in the field, so this was an exciting result for us. This allows us to create more advanced bioprinted heart tissue, with the ability to mature in a laboratory setting, better replicating adult human heart structure,” Professor Andrew Daly, Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering and principal investigator of the project, said in a statement.

Gene editing

Having a family history of certain diseases increases your risk, including cardiovascular diseases. But what if you can curb that risk factor? Too good to be true? Well, the world of genetics is evolving, so it is a possibility in the near future. “Imagine preventing heart failure or fixing inherited heart problems before they even cause symptoms. That’s where CRISPR and gene therapy are headed,” Dr. Yaranov said.

Pig hearts for people

The possibility of xenotransplantation will revolutionize heart care. This is the process of transplanting organs, tissues, or cells from one species to another, most notably from a genetically modified pig to a human. “Sounds like science fiction? It’s already been done,” Dr. Yaranov said. “With the right gene edits, pig hearts may become a real option when human organs aren’t available,” he added. While there are many ethical concerns behind it, it is still one possibility.

Women & Heart Health: What Every Woman Should Know

mRNA therapy

Another novel approach would be mRNA therapy to repair heart damage. This is the same technology behind the COVID-19 vaccines. It is now being tested to regrow blood vessels and heal damaged heart muscle, according to the cardiologist.

Nervous system–based heart therapy

Imagine your brain curing heart diseases, instead of medication. Well, that day is not far. Dr. Yaranov revealed that nervous system-based heart therapy is being tested. “Instead of just pills, we’re now testing ways to ‘rewire’ the nervous system, using small devices to calm the body’s stress signals and improve heart function,” he said.

We’re familiar with lab-grown diamonds, but what about ‘lab-grown hearts’?
