Madonna<\/a> has confirmed her sepsis<\/a> diagnosis for the first time since a life-threatening bacterial infection left her hospitalised in 2023.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Hung Up\u2019 singer was rushed to intensive care with few details released at the time, forcing her to postpone her\u00a0Celebration World Tour. While medical commentators suggested sepsis was the likely cause, Madonna has now revealed that was indeed the case.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Jay Shetty\u2019s\u00a0On Purpose<\/a>\u00a0podcast, released today, Madonna shared how she was unconscious for four days and that the experience taught her about \u201cradical acceptance\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had something called sepsis, and it can kill you\u201d \u2013 Madonna revealing for the first time that she had sepsis in 2023<\/p>\n

She explained:\u00a0\u201cRadical acceptance is just accepting that what is happening to you is meant to happen to you, and that you\u2019re gonna be okay\u2026. There\u2019s no way we\u2019re going to escape suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n

She recalled the frightening moment when her health deteriorated:\u00a0\u201cI was rehearsing for a tour, and I got a bacterial infection. One minute I was alive and dancing around, and the next minute I was in the ICU, unconscious for four days. They took me off the ventilator, I started to breathe on my own, and I had something called sepsis, and it can kill you.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is still unclear what initially caused Madonna\u2019s bacterial infection, but doctors said it became extremely serious and required intensive care treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know when it was gonna end\u201d \u2013 Madonna whilst she was recovering from sepsis <\/p>\n

In another moment on the podcast, while talking about forgiveness, she recalled that, while in bed in the hospital, she had a vision of her late mother, Madonna Louise, asking her to come with her seemingly into the afterlife.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother appeared to me, and she said, \u2018Do you want to come with me?\u2019 And I said, \u2018No.\u2019 My assistant was in the room with me\u2026 she heard me say no,\u201d she told Shetty.<\/p>\n

One year after her recovery, Madonna celebrated her health on Instagram. The 67-year-old wrote:\u00a0\u201cA year ago today, I had just come home from the hospital after surviving a life-threatening illness. I could barely stand in my backyard holding one sparkler.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madonna admitted the recovery was far from easy, especially given her usual self-image as \u201cSuperwoman\u201d.\u00a0\u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m gonna kick this, I\u2019m gonna be good, I\u2019m getting back into rehearsals,\u2019 and I had no strength, no energy, couldn\u2019t get out of bed, and I didn\u2019t know when it was gonna end,\u201d\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n

She acknowledged the seriousness of sepsis:\u00a0\u201cSome people never recover from it completely, never have their full health again.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the same interview, Madonna revealed she experienced suicidal thoughts<\/a> during her 2016 custody battle with ex-husband Guy Ritchie<\/a> over their son, Rocco.<\/p>\n

The musician also revealed she\u2019s recorded a new song \u2018Fragile\u2019<\/a> for her late brother\u00a0Christopher Ciccone<\/a>, which will feature on her forthcoming album, due next year.<\/p>\n
