So when I came across a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qlSIPll_xrU\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qlSIPll_xrU\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">short walking workout<\/a> from one of my favorite fitness trainers, April from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/yes2next\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/yes2next\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yes2next<\/a>, I decided to give it a try.<\/p>\n<p>April\u2019s Japanese walking workout is a version of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/features\/interval-walking-training\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/features\/interval-walking-training\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3&#215;3 interval walking workout<\/a>, a routine that\u2019s at the heart of an exercise plan devised for middle-aged and older adults by scientists in Japan. The original routine consists of five intervals of three minutes of brisk walking with three minutes of slow walking, performed four times a week, and a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cdnsciencepub.com\/doi\/10.1139\/apnm-2023-0595\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cdnsciencepub.com\/doi\/10.1139\/apnm-2023-0595\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">number of studies<\/a> have shown a raft of health benefits.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"7a93b7df-50c6-4469-80b3-c12590c7218d-2\">April, who trains with her 84-year-old mum Aiko, has modified the workout, reducing the number of intervals performed to three and Aiko spends the recovery period taking steps while seated, so it\u2019s a good option for anyone who struggles with balance or standing for too long.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"396cd4b5-ad05-4412-9aa9-422ba4a752ad\">Even though it was only 20 minutes, I found it surprisingly energizing. Here\u2019s what else I discovered.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-it-got-my-heart-pumping\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>It got my heart pumping<\/p>\n<p id=\"b135df14-c2f3-4d5f-b16a-617b1d5827fc\">I naively thought that just walking wouldn\u2019t be enough to make me sweaty (or \u201cdewy\u201d as April puts it) but by the end of this <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/exercise\/walking\/20-minute-walking-workout\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/exercise\/walking\/20-minute-walking-workout\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20-minute walking workout<\/a> my heart was pumping. Walking is well known for boosting cardiovascular health, which is important for reducing our risk of heart-related diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes and other chronic illnesses.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-i-felt-less-stressed-afterwards\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>I felt less stressed afterwards<\/p>\n<p id=\"e482e00b-46d0-424e-8950-ab19a79cbeb5\">I feel like I\u2019m always juggling a million things, so anything I can do to reduce stress levels and feel calm is a bonus.
