JK Rowling has just delivered a brutal public takedown of Emma Watson.<\/p>\n

Watson, of course, became famous playing Hermione Granger in the film adaptations of Rowling\u2019s Harry Potter books. But in recent years, Watson and her fellow co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint have not only posed, as all virtue-signalling celebs seemingly do, as so-called trans allies \u2013 they have also publicly turned on Rowling over her gender-critical views. <\/p>\n

However, speaking on the Jay Shetty Podcast last week, Watson seemed to be seeking some sort of rapprochement with Rowling. \u2018It\u2019s my deepest wish that I hope people who don\u2019t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don\u2019t necessarily share the same opinion with\u2019, Watson said.<\/p>\n

Understandably, given the Harry Potter stars\u2019 trans-activist posturing, Rowling did not receive Watson\u2019s comments well. Writing on X<\/a> yesterday, she said that she was not \u2018owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created\u2019 and that \u2018Watson and her co-stars have every right to embrace gender-identity ideology\u2019. However, she then turned on them: \u2018Emma and Dan [Radcliffe] in particular\u2026 think our former professional association gives them a right \u2013 nay, obligation \u2013 to critique me and my views in public.\u2019<\/p>\n

Rowling has every right to be annoyed. Some of the Potter brats\u2019 remarks about her have been snide and mean-spririted. Take Watson\u2019s 2022 BAFTA Film Awards speech<\/a>, which began with a smug: \u2018I\u2019m here for all the witches.\u2019 As the crowd burst into applause, she mouthed \u2018bar one\u2019 \u2013 a clear dig at Rowling.<\/p>\n

Rowling highlighted this moment as a \u2018turning point\u2019. She revealed that after that speech, Watson had someone \u2018pass on a handwritten note\u2019, which read \u2018I\u2019m so sorry for what you\u2019re going through\u2019, instead of texting or calling her like a decent person might. This \u2018bar one\u2019 dig came at a time when the vitriol and threats aimed at Rowling were \u2018at their peak\u2019. Rowling said that Watson had effectively poured \u2018more petrol on the flames\u2019, before assuaging any guilt she might have felt by offering a tepid, one-line note, as if to reassure herself of her \u2018fundamental sympathy and kindness\u2019.<\/p>\n

Rowling concluded her takedown by holding up a mirror to Watson\u2019s class privilege. \u2018Emma has so little experience of real life she\u2019s ignorant of how ignorant she is\u2019, she wrote. She can afford her luxury transgender beliefs, in other words, because she has never come close to experiencing their consequences: <\/p>\n

\u2018Has she had to strip off in a newly mixed-sex changing room at a council-run swimming pool? Is she ever likely to need a state-run rape crisis centre that refuses to guarantee an all-female service? To find herself sharing a prison cell with a male rapist who\u2019s identified into the women\u2019s prison?\u2019<\/p>\n

Rowling then delivers the killshot: \u2018I wasn\u2019t a multimillionaire at 14. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous.\u2019 <\/p>\n

The Harry Potter author knows the cost of prominent women like Watson \u2018trashing\u2019 women\u2019s rights from their seat in the lap of luxury, and it\u2019s the little women \u2013 everyday women \u2013 who pay the price.<\/p>\n

Besides, it\u2019s difficult not to suspect that Watson has only changed tack now because, as Rowling points out, \u2018she\u2019s noticed full-throated condemnation of me is no longer quite as fashionable as it used to be\u2019. After years of silence and sideways glances towards Rowling, while doubling down on transgenderism when it was in vogue, it now appears Watson wants to backtrack a little, to reach out to someone she once eagerly hung out to dry. She seems to think that she can have her cake, and maybe eat a little bit, too. <\/p>\n

In case Rowling\u2019s missive wasn\u2019t clear enough, that isn\u2019t going to happen.<\/p>\n
