Peacemaker series creator and showrunner James Gunn recently discussed how much of David Ayer\u2018s 2016 superhero feature Suicide Squad is canon in the DC Universe (DCU). This comes after Peacemaker Season 2, which is part of the DCU, made references to the events from the movie.<\/p>\n
James Gunn talks David Ayer\u2019s Suicide Squad\u2019s DCU connection<\/p>\n
During James Gunn\u2019s appearance on Phase Hero: A Film & TV Podcast, host Brandon Davis spoke about how surprised he was to discover references to the romantic interest that Joel Kinnaman\u2019s Rick Flag Jr. has for Cara Delevingne\u2019s Dr. June Moone \/ Enchantress in David Ayer\u2019s Suicide Squad.<\/p>\n
In response, the DCU co-head said, \u201cYeah, I know. And then, sometimes I regret it, because it was like, obviously, our June Moone still has sorceress powers. He\u2019s [Flag Jr.] cheating on her. It\u2019s not the great love story it was presented as in David\u2019s movie. So, it\u2019s like there are some differences there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gunn proceeded to note that the world these characters inhabit has metahumans. He added that Flag Jr. \u201cis this good-looking guy, who\u2019s a soldier, and it seems like he would be attracted to a metahuman girl.\u201d<\/p>\n
Davis then stated that he would be a \u201cfraud\u201d to his audience if he didn\u2019t ask this question before enquiring if there were other parts of the 2016 movie that Gunn considered \u201cloosely canon\u201d or \u201cis that sort of the further we go back, the blurrier it gets.\u201d<\/p>\n
This prompted Gunn to reveal that he even had a conversation about what is canon in the DCU in 2021\u2019s The Suicide Squad, which he helmed. When Davis asked if that meant David Dastmalchian\u2019s Abner Krill \/ Polka-Dot Man could still be alive, Gunn clarified that he would not bring back someone he had killed in an earlier movie because \u201cthat becomes too confusing.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, Gunn did mention that actors such as Nathan Fillion and Michael Rooker have appeared in different roles after their initial characters died in the 2021 movie, potentially hinting that Dastmalchian might join the cast of a future DCU project.<\/p>\n
