{"id":183652,"date":"2025-10-07T17:38:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T17:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/183652\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T17:38:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T17:38:09","slug":"petronas-ceo-apologises-after-criticism-about-f1-podium-celebration-at-singapore-grand-prix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/183652\/","title":{"rendered":"Petronas CEO apologises after criticism about F1 podium celebration at Singapore Grand Prix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PETALING JAYA &#8211; Malaysian energy company Petronas\u2019 president and group chief executive officer Tengku Muhammad Taufik has apologised for participating in the Formula One podium celebration where champagne was sprayed during the recent Singapore Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI acknowledge that my spur-of-the-moment exuberance in celebrating that moment of victory may have been misplaced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhile I can categorically state I did not consume any alcohol, as a Muslim, I should have been more aware of the sensitivities associated with taking part in such celebrations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI want to apologise for any unintended offence caused and take full responsibility for my actions,\u201d he said in a statement on Oct 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Tengku Muhammad said he was honoured to receive the constructors\u2019 championship trophy on behalf of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, calling the victory \u201ca much-awaited achievement\u201d in their long-standing partnership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He also expressed gratitude for the continued public support of Petronas\u2019 participation in Formula One, describing it as \u201cthe pinnacle of motorsports competition\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Petronas chief drew criticism after he was seen on the podium when champagne was sprayed in celebration after winners were presented with trophies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Formula One champagne shower tradition dates back to the 1950s.
