With the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X<\/a> launching next week (!), it’s no surprise that we’re starting to see some early footage of the Ally X out in the wild, and that means we can start seeing how powerful this thing really is!<\/p>\n

The video you see below is courtesy of YouTuber Dans ta grosse poche<\/a>, who received their ROG Xbox Ally X handheld early due to a delivery error. They’ve taken it upon themselves to record footage of seven games running on the device, with those being Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Street Fighter 6, Gears of War: Reloaded, Elden Ring, Elden Ring Nightreign, Monster Hunter Wilds and Hollow Knight: Silksong.<\/p>\n

They mention that the intent behind this 45-minute video isn’t to provide a detailed breakdown on how each game runs, but rather to showcase a general overview of their experiences playing the games so far. In other words, they don’t make many tweaks to things like graphics, resolution and upscaling, so the figures we’re seeing here aren’t necessarily representative of the kind of experience you’ll be getting with these titles on your personal system.<\/p>\n

“The idea [with this video] is really to have a somewhat mainstream, somewhat general approach.”<\/p>\n

So, in the footage, we see that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33<\/a> is running at anything from 30FPS-60FPS depending on the wattage being used, and it seems the graphics are all mostly on default settings – so probably anywhere from medium-high. They also mention how they won’t compromise on 1080p, so they never dip down to 720p or 900p.<\/p>\n

Street Fighter 6<\/a> is described as being an excellent experience on the ROG Xbox Ally X, clearly hitting 60FPS with ease at the higher wattages and hovering around 50-60FPS when dropping the power a bit.<\/p>\n

Gears of War: Reloaded<\/a>, which has already been demoed in the run-up to release, seems to be another excellent fit for the system, and it seems you don’t need to use the highest wattages in order to achieve a fluid 60FPS.<\/p>\n

In Elden Ring<\/a> and Elden Ring Nightreign<\/a>, they seem to be getting a 30FPS+ read for the most part, although that’s with the quality settings set to “High”. The temperature seems to climb quite a bit on the “High” preset to around 75\u00b0C, but then drops significantly to 60\u00b0C when they test the “Low” preset for just a few seconds (and the FPS obviously goes up).<\/p>\n

Monster Hunter Wilds<\/a> seems to run at around 30-40FPS by default with a “personalised” graphics preset (presumably around medium-high again), but this is where the power of AMD FSR<\/a> is shown off, with the game instantly jumping to over 60FPS when that frame generation toggle is activated. They say it’s a “much more satisfying” experience this way.<\/p>\n

And as for Hollow Knight: Silksong<\/a>? Well, that’s just insane. In their tests, the YouTuber shows the game hitting over 300FPS in some cases, and even on the lowest power setting, it achieves 60FPS with ease (along with a temperature of just 46\u00b0C).<\/p>\n

Here’s a bit of how they sum up their initial experience:<\/p>\n

“There are games for which this Xbox Ally X performs magnificently… as soon as you adjust [the settings] a little bit, you’re going to have something that’s going to be super, super nice.”<\/p>\n

As mentioned, we suggest you don’t read too much into these initial impressions until the likes of Digital Foundry and other testers get their hands on the Ally X – we need to see a lot more detail in terms of how games run at different settings, wattages, resolutions, etc.<\/p>\n

Based on what we’re seeing here though, it seems many games are going to run at 60FPS comfortably on the ROG Xbox Ally X, while others will benefit from frame generation and\/or just tweaking the settings in order to provide a more fluid experience than 30FPS if you want it. That’s the benefit of having a gaming PC in your hands!<\/p>\n

Hopefully we’ll have a lot more to share on the ROG Xbox Ally over the coming days.<\/p>\n
