It\u2019s often easier to take a pill than invest in behavior, diet, and lifestyle change,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emoryhealthcare.org\/locations\/hospitals\/emory-university-hospital-midtown\/bariatric-center\/our-team\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Melissa Majumdar, MS, RD<\/a>, a registered dietitian and bariatric surgery coordinator with Emory University Hospital Midtown, told Verywell in an email.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Before taking a supplement, experts advise considering the potential for <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/safety-of-amazon-supplements-6500961\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">misleading health claims<\/a> on the label. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn\u2019t evaluate dietary supplements for safety or efficacy. Some supplement labels promote unproven claims that the product has \u201cno side effects\u201d or is \u201cbetter than\u201d a prescription drug.<\/p>\n<p>  When Supplements May Be Needed  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The USPSTF does recommend some supplements. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/benefits-of-folic-acid-8665129\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">folic acid<\/a>, also known as vitamin B9, got an\u00a0\u201cA\u201d rating for use in pregnant adults as it helps <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/what-is-folate-1763888\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prevent certain birth defects<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Although some foods are fortified with folic acid, it\u2019s still difficult to get enough of this vitamin through diet alone.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/vitamin-d-benefits-11688450\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vitamin D<\/a> is another nutrient that can be difficult to obtain entirely through diet.
