The health service states you should &#8220;wait until you&#8217;re feeling better&#8221; before getting the flu jab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The flu vaccination is provided on the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NHS<\/a> annually during autumn or early winter for people at heightened risk of severe flu complications. Those eligible include <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/exactly-who-should-covid-19-36003950\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">people aged over 65 and those with specific long-term medical conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/vaccinations\/flu-vaccine\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NHS website<\/a> states that the vaccination is designed to shield you from the &#8220;most common types&#8221; of flu strains. Nevertheless, there remains a possibility of contracting flu following vaccination, though symptoms are likely to be less severe and shorter in duration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">This year&#8217;s autumn\/winter vaccination programme has commenced, with appointments available through GP practices, the NHS app, and selected pharmacies. However, there are<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/full-list-people-urged-avoid-36008817\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> certain circumstances in which you shouldn&#8217;t get vaccinated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0_GettyImages-2212604359.jpg\" alt=\"Vaccine\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Certain groups are eligible for a free flu vaccine from the NHS(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The NHS stated: &#8220;If you have a high temperature, wait until you&#8217;re feeling better before having your flu vaccine.&#8221; Additionally, some people may experience allergic reactions to the injection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">&#8220;Most people who are eligible for the flu vaccine can have it,&#8221; the NHS confirmed. However, it added: &#8220;You only cannot have the vaccine if you&#8217;ve had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or an ingredient in the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">&#8220;Some of the flu vaccines used in the UK contain egg protein. Tell the person vaccinating you if you have an egg allergy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Side effects of the vaccine<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The most common side effects of the flu vaccine are &#8220;mild&#8221; and improve within one to two days. The NHS says they can include:.<\/p>\n<p>Pain or soreness where the injection was givenA slightly raised temperatureAn aching body<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The NHS added: &#8220;The injected flu vaccines used in the UK do not contain live flu viruses. It&#8217;s not usually administered at the same time as the RSV vaccine, but you can have them simultaneously if a doctor or nurse thinks it&#8217;s necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Who can have the vaccine<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">You can receive the free NHS flu vaccine if you:<\/p>\n<p>Are aged 65 or over (including those who will be 65 by March 31, 2026)Have certain long-term health conditionsAre pregnantLive in a care homeAre the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer&#8217;s allowanceLive with someone who has a weakened immune system<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Frontline health and social care workers can also receive a flu vaccine through their employer.
