The NHS has advised postponing a crucial autumn vaccination if you display one particular symptom. The health service states you should “wait until you’re feeling better” before getting the flu jab.<\/p>\n

The flu vaccination is provided on the NHS<\/a> annually during autumn or early winter for people at heightened risk of severe flu complications. Those eligible include people aged over 65 and those with specific long-term medical conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The NHS website<\/a> states that the vaccination is designed to shield you from the “most common types” of flu strains. Nevertheless, there remains a possibility of contracting flu following vaccination, though symptoms are likely to be less severe and shorter in duration.<\/p>\n

This year’s autumn\/winter vaccination programme has commenced, with appointments available through GP practices, the NHS app, and selected pharmacies. However, there are certain circumstances in which you shouldn’t get vaccinated<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The NHS stated: “If you have a high temperature, wait until you’re feeling better before having your flu vaccine.” Additionally, some people may experience allergic reactions to the injection.<\/p>\n

“Most people who are eligible for the flu vaccine can have it,” the NHS confirmed. However, it added: “You only cannot have the vaccine if you’ve had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or an ingredient in the vaccine.<\/p>\n

“Some of the flu vaccines used in the UK contain egg protein. Tell the person vaccinating you if you have an egg allergy.”<\/p>\n

Side effects of the vaccine<\/p>\n

The most common side effects of the flu vaccine are “mild” and improve within one to two days. The NHS says they can include:.<\/p>\n

Pain or soreness where the injection was givenA slightly raised temperatureAn aching body<\/p>\n

The NHS added: “The injected flu vaccines used in the UK do not contain live flu viruses. They cannot give you flu.”<\/p>\n

You can receive the flu vaccine at the same time as other vaccines such as the COVID-19 and shingles vaccines. It’s not usually administered at the same time as the RSV vaccine, but you can have them simultaneously if a doctor or nurse thinks it’s necessary.<\/p>\n

Who can have the vaccine<\/p>\n

You can receive the free NHS flu vaccine if you:<\/p>\n

Are aged 65 or over (including those who will be 65 by March 31, 2026)Have certain long-term health conditionsAre pregnantLive in a care homeAre the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer’s allowanceLive with someone who has a weakened immune system<\/p>\n

Frontline health and social care workers can also receive a flu vaccine through their employer.
