US AI giant Anthropic is paying its UK staff eye-watering financial packages as it attempts to build a foothold in this country.<\/p>\n
The business, which only launched in the UK at the start of 2023, increased its headcount from six to 43 in 2024 while its staff costs rocketed from \u00a33.6m to \u00a324m.<\/p>\n
Its wage bill went from \u00a31.6m to \u00a312.3m in the year while its share-base payments jumped from \u00a31.7m to \u00a39.6m.<\/p>\n
Social security costs grew from \u00a3216,731 to \u00a31.6m while other pension costs also went from \u00a336,313 to \u00a3380,976.<\/p>\n
The increases mean that, if divided equally, Anthropic\u2019s total staff costs is enough for each UK employee\u2019s financial package to total almost \u00a3560,000 a year.<\/p>\n
The new accounts<\/a> filed with Companies House<\/a> also show the UK arm\u2019s turnover jumped from \u00a35m to \u00a329.5m and its pre-tax profit surged from \u00a3500,919 to \u00a32.6m.<\/p>\n Anthropic was founded in 2021 by CEO Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Jared Kaplan, Jack Clark and Ben Mann in San Francisco.<\/p>\n The business has developed a group of large language models named Claude and was valued at over $183bn last month.<\/a><\/p>\n Anthropic received $4bn from Amazon in September 2023 and \u00a32bn from Google the following month.<\/p>\n Anthropic poaches British AI firm\u2019s leadership<\/p>\n In August<\/a>, City AM reported that Anthropic had hired the three co-founders of London-based AI startup HumanLoop, along with most of its engineering and research staff.<\/p>\n The hires included chief executive Raza Habib, chief tech officer Peter Hayes and chief product officer Jordan Burgess, all of whom established HumanLoop in 2020 as a University College London spinout.<\/p>\n HumanLoop built a platform for enterprises to test, compare and integrate large language models (LLMs) into their operations, with an emphasis on helping developers deploy AI tools safely and efficiently.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n \t\t\tWages soar to \u00a31.5bn as HMRC ramps up on compliance staff<\/a><\/p>\n It secured backing from Y Combinator, Index Ventures and AlbionVC, and counted financial services firms, healthcare providers and technology companies among its customers.<\/p>\n At the time, Anthropic confirmed it had not bought the company or its intellectual property, but said the team\u2019s expertise would be \u201cinvaluable\u201d for advancing AI safety and tooling.<\/p>\n Earlier this year<\/a>, Anthropic\u2019s chief executive Dario Amodei warned that AI could eliminate up to 50 per cent of all entry level white collar jobs within the next five years \u2013 with the UK market particularly\u00a0vulnerable\u00a0to disruption.<\/p>\n Speaking at his company\u2019s inaugural developer conference, Amodei\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0the widespread adoption of AI, especially advanced language models like Claude-Anthropic\u2019s flagship product, is progressing quicker than most people realise.<\/p>\n OpenAI UK rakes in millions<\/p>\n In July<\/a>, City AM reported that OpenAI had raked in millions of pounds since the launch of artificial intelligence (AI) service ChatGPT in the UK.<\/p>\n The UK division of\u00a0the US tech giant<\/a>\u00a0ended last year with current assets of \u00a356.2m which included \u00a342.4m in the bank and a further \u00a313.7m owed by debtors, according to\u00a0accounts<\/a>\u00a0filed with\u00a0Companies House<\/a>.<\/p>\n Those totals compare to the current assets of \u00a31.1m the business had at the end of the 15 months to 31 December, 2023, which was made up of \u00a3198,915 in the bank and \u00a3973,990 owed by debtors.<\/p>\n OpenAI\u2019s non-current assets also rose from \u00a3178,823 to \u00a3964,495 but its current liabilities also surged from \u00a3476,555 to \u00a342.2m.<\/p>\n Of the \u00a342.2m it owes, \u00a339.8m is inter-company debt which is not expected to be paid back to its US parent.<\/p>\n At the end of 2024, the company\u2019s shareholders\u2019 funds had increased from \u00a3875,173 to \u00a36.2m while it made a profit of \u00a34.1m in the year, up from a loss of \u00a31.2m.<\/p>\n According to the results, the number of people employed by OpenAI increased from 19 to 55.
