{"id":189832,"date":"2025-10-10T06:27:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T06:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/189832\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T06:27:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T06:27:07","slug":"dormouse-survey-reveals-bumper-breeding-season-in-hampshire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/189832\/","title":{"rendered":"Dormouse survey reveals &#8216;bumper&#8217; breeding season in Hampshire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Hazel dormice are the only native rodent to the UK with a distinctive furry tail, and while they can live in many habitats, they favour woodlands and hedgerows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, the dormouse population has declined by 70% nationally since 2000, and a 2023 report found the species was extinct in 20 English counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Trained and licenced surveyors are carrying out studies at monitoring sites in Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ms Hadler said the combination of a warm summer and &#8220;sensational&#8221; autumn food supplies have boosted breeding and allowed second broods to be born. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Dormice normally have a single litter of four babies on average in a breeding season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">So far, one survey at Harewood Common in Andover and another privately-owned woodland counted 47 dormice at all life stages.
