{"id":190234,"date":"2025-10-10T10:35:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T10:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/190234\/"},"modified":"2025-10-10T10:35:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T10:35:09","slug":"alex-palou-blames-mclaren-in-court-over-f1-deal-zak-brown-denies-misleading-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/190234\/","title":{"rendered":"Alex Palou blames McLaren in court over F1 deal, Zak Brown denies misleading him"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/alex-palou\/21151\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Palou<\/a> has claimed that Zak Brown told him he could help find him a seat in Formula 1, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/team\/mclaren\/10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">McLaren<\/a> Racing boss insists he never made any promises or misled the driver.<\/p>\n<p>The long-running dispute between Palou and McLaren reached the UK High Court this week, with the Woking-based squad suing the IndyCar star for over $20 million for breaching their contract.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2022, both Chip Ganassi Racing and McLaren had announced competing claims over Palou\u2019s services for the following IndyCar season.<\/p>\n<p>After several months of negotiation, the parties reached an agreement that allowed Palou to remain with Chip Ganassi for the 2023 season while also serving as a test and development driver for McLaren\u2019s F1 team.<\/p>\n<p>Under the arrangement, he would have left CGR to join McLaren\u2019s IndyCar operation in 2024, giving both sides a compromise they were happy with.<\/p>\n<p>However, Palou eventually decided to remain at CGR in 2024, claiming he had lost faith in McLaren\u2019s ability to offer him a seat in F1.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/patricio-o-ward-arrow-mclaren--1.jpg\" alt=\"Patricio O'Ward, Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet, Alex Palou, Chip Ganassi Racing Honda\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Patricio O&#8217;Ward, Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet, Alex Palou, Chip Ganassi Racing Honda<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Phillip Abbott \/ Motorsport Images<\/p>\n<p>As the matter proceeded to the UK High Court, both sides provided further details about the circumstances leading up to their split, as they continue to dispute the level of damages owed.<\/p>\n<p>In his witness statement, the Indy 500 winner claimed that Brown had given him hope that an F1 seat might become available in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen testing with McLaren, Zak told me he believed we could make it happen, and that he would give me all the preparation I needed to get to F1,\u201d he said in court, as reported by Motor Sport Magazine. \u201cAt the time I thought he was genuine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Brown didn\u2019t make Piastri decision\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As McLaren\u2019s contract with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/daniel-ricciardo\/9378\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> neared its end after the 2022 season, McLaren lured rising Australian star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/oscar-piastri\/828689\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Oscar Piastri<\/a> away from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/team\/alpine\/24858\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Alpine<\/a> and signed him to partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/lando-norris\/289316\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Lando Norris<\/a> for 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Palou has alleged that Brown reassured him Piastri\u2019s arrival would not affect his own chances of securing a future F1 seat, but by that point he was already getting the sense that his opportunity in F1 was slipping away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went for dinner with Zak near MTC [McLaren Technology Centre],\u201d said Palou. \u201cZak told me it was not his decision to hire Oscar. He said it was the decision of [then] team manager Andreas Seidl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZak told me Piastri\u2019s performance would be evaluated against mine for 2024. Zak said that, from his point of view, my chance of getting the F1 seat was not affected by Oscar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, I knew everything had changed. From that point on, I started to be more willing to stay with CGR in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brown&#8217;s denial<br \/>\n   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/zak-brown-mclaren.jpg\" alt=\"Zak Brown, McLaren\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Zak Brown, McLaren<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Andrew Ferraro \/ LAT Images via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Brown denied giving Palou any assurances about a seat in McLaren\u2019s grand prix team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him what the opportunities would be in F1,\u201d said Brown. \u201cI never told him he would be under consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Palou\u2019s counsel Nick De Marco accused Brown of stringing the Spaniard along in the same court session, Brown replied: &#8220;I never strung along Alex. I never told him he would be under consideration for 2023. There was some optionality to join F1.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Palou\u2019s reaction to Piastri\u2019s announcement<\/p>\n<p>Palou also described how he felt after F2 champion Piastri was announced as McLaren\u2019s second driver for the 2023 season.<\/p>\n<p>This occurred prior to CGR and McLaren reaching an agreement for 2023, and before the second dispute between him and the team unfolded the following year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very upset, worried and angry that McLaren had signed another rookie driver other than me,\u201d he said\u00a0 \u201cI asked MIM (Monaco Increase Management) to speak to Zak to ask what was going on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn September 22 they had a conversation with Zak, and Zak had told them they needed someone who would be quick in 2023, but that this would not interfere with my chances to get into F1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AlphaTauri opportunity<\/p>\n<p>Palou was seen as a potential option for AlphaTauri as the squad sought a new driver for the 2024 season.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Thursday, the four-time IndyCar champion claimed that the Faenza squad lost interest in hiring him after a private meeting between Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko and Brown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere had been some rumours in the media about AlphaTauri looking for a F1 driver and my name was in the mix,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn June 2023, I contacted and had a conversation over the phone with Helmut Marko.\u00a0Helmut was open to me driving for them, and asked for the conditions of my McLaren release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZak had directly called Helmut, and apparently Helmut had told Zak he was not interested anymore.\u00a0I don\u2019t know what happened in that conversation, but for sure it didn\u2019t help because suddenly Helmut was not interested anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/patricio-o-ward-arrow-mclaren.jpg\" alt=\"Patricio O'ward, Arrow McLaren\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Patricio O&#8217;ward, Arrow McLaren<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Jake Galstad \/ Lumen via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>McLaren \u201cplunged into crisis mode\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, McLaren\u2019s counsel Paul Goulding detailed the financial impact of Palou\u2019s decision to renege on his deal with the squad and continue with CGR in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMcLaren was plunged into crisis mode by Mr Palou\u2019s deliberate breach of contract,\u201d he said. \u201cHis unlawful actions caused deep consternation among McLaren\u2019s sponsors, whose expectations had been cast aside overnight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMcLaren had to find a replacement driver at short notice, yet there was no one available of Mr Palou\u2019s calibre.
