We didn’t eat much nutrient-dense food or pay attention to fitness, and I followed suit. I ate very little fresh fruits and vegetables, and instead opted for easy-to-grab but processed snacks like pretzels and chips. And although I played soccer when I was a little kid, I wasn’t exercising at all by the time I hit my teens.

Everything changed during those teenage years, as my family’s lifestyle began to have serious, life-ending consequences: one by one, type 2 diabetes began taking down my loved ones. In one year alone, I lost five relatives from the disease, and it was heartbreaking.

When I went off to college, I started to get some movement in through being in the marching band, which most people don’t realize is a very active activity. (During a single practice, I could get upwards of 30,000 steps!)

But it wasn’t enough: Around that time, I learned during a routine physical that I was at least 50 pounds overweight and at risk for developing type 2 diabetes myself. That was my wake-up call—the moment I decided to take my health seriously. I was determined to evolve my lifestyle to keep myself and my family healthy, happy, and thriving for years to come.

At 20, I decided to switch to a vegan diet so I could focus on eating more plant- and fruit-forward.

At first, I started as a raw vegan—meaning everything I ate was uncooked—but honestly, I found that approach boring. So, eventually I settled for a more balanced diet and began cooking delicious meals: I ate everything from sautéed tofu and grilled vegan patties, to jackfruit quesadillas and vegan mac and cheese, which has been much more sustainable and satisfying.

Once I figured out how to make vegan food taste amazing, I started cooking for my family. They couldn’t believe just how good the food could taste without meat, excessive amounts of salt, or sugar. Little by little, the vegetable-forward meals that I made helped them realize that eating well can be just as delicious as, well, fried and fast food. (Vegan quesadillas and burgers quickly became a household favorite.)

Around the same time, I began to strength train because my doctor told me it was the best way to support my health.

Initially, I didn’t really know how to work out. But through trial and error—and the advice from the kind, patient trainers at my college gym—I eventually fell in love with lifting weights. I learned how to split up training sessions up by muscle group, as well as what it felt like to work until fatigue, which helped me grow stronger.

When I started eating healthier and exercising regularly, I began losing weight and building muscle, and my family started to take notice and ask me for advice. Before long, I was helping relatives across different states build workout plans and meal strategies tailored to their lives. I was even inspired to become an ISSA-certified personal trainer so I could give my family, and eventually others, the best guidance possible.

Within two years of eating better and becoming a regular at the weight room, I lost 50 pounds and was no longer flirting with diabetes. But more importantly, I’ve gained the freedom to live my life: I can go on weekend hikes, chase my nieces and nephews around, and help my relatives pack up and move homes without thinking about it twice—and that’s beautiful.

Now, my workouts blend cardio and strength, and I’m currently training for a bikini competition.

I lift weights five days per week by following a program that adheres to the progressive overload principle, which is increasing the variables of my workouts over time so I can keep getting stronger. I’m prepping for an upcoming bikini competition, so my workouts are usually 60 to 90 minutes long.

I start each session with 30 minutes of cardio on the StairMaster, then I get into lifting: I break my training sessions into traditional splits, rotating between an upper body push/pull day, a lower body press day, and a lower body pull day. The specific exercises vary, but at least once a week, my program has me do squats, deadlifts, hip thrusts, shoulder presses, and bench presses.

As part of living an active lifestyle, I also try to get a minimum of 15,000 steps a day.

My strength transformation wouldn’t have happened without these three factors:1. I sought advice from more experienced gym-goers around me.

I’ll admit that I was intimidated the first time I stepped foot in the weight room. But from day one, the other people in the gym were nothing but welcoming. They always smiled at me in the mirror, and eventually I felt comfortable enough to ask them questions about my form, which they willingly answered. Now, we’re still close, keeping one another motivated in person and over text. These dedicated individuals have been some of my greatest teachers—not just helping teach me how to lift, but also what it looks like to stay disciplined while having fun along the way.

2. I listened to my doctor.

My doctor told me, in no uncertain terms, that if I didn’t start adopting better nutrition and exercise habits that my health and lifespan may be impacted. This propelled me to take action—eating healthily and integrating regular exercise into my life—because I saw what living with disease looked like from my family members, and I wanted better for my current and future self.

I’ll never forget my first doctor’s appointment after I’d made changes when I learned that all of the health markers had improved—my provider was so shocked. He told me he’d assumed that I’d end up like so many of my late relatives, so proving him wrong and seeing the pride on his face was one of the most rewarding moments of my life.

3. I stayed motivated by knowing I was setting an example for my family—and it’s really paid off.

Because my family noticed and admired the changes I made to my lifestyle, we gained new hobbies to bond over—and we all helped each other stay motivated because of that. These healthy habits ensure that I’ll get more time with them, and I’m so excited about that. Many of my family members have lost at least 25 pounds, and we’ve also seen fewer diabetes diagnoses, fewer complications, and best of all, fewer funerals.

These days, our weekly family-wide calls—which include relatives from across the country—are full of discussion about recipes, workouts, sore muscles, recovery protocols, and health improvements. My local relatives sometimes even join me at the gym for a workout session, replete with the StairMaster and weight room. Trust, there’s nothing more fun than sweating with the ones I love.

Of course, the weight loss and health improvements are worth celebrating, but what’s been most amazing to me is how much happier my whole family is: We have more energy, we walk around with more confidence, and we genuinely love life. We got here just by staying disciplined and motivating one another, one rep, one step, and one veggie-filled bite at a time.

Gabrielle Kassel (she/her) is a sex and wellness journalist who writes at the intersection of queerness, sexual health, and pleasure.
