But They Are Worried About Jobs."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/ywAAAAAAQABAAACAUwAOw==\" alt=\"Lauren Petracca \/ Bloomberg via Getty Images Consumer sentiment was little changed in October even as worries over the labor market persisted.\" loading=\"eager\" height=\"640\" width=\"960\" class=\"yf-1gfnohs loader\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Lauren Petracca \/ Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p> Consumer sentiment was little changed in October even as worries over the labor market persisted.          <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for October inched down from September as respondents to the survey raised few worries about the ongoing government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">However, worries about the labor market pushed the measure to its lowest since May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/the-economy-shrugged-off-past-government-shutdowns-but-this-one-could-be-different-11825089\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:government may be shut down;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">government may be shut down<\/a>, but consumers hardly noticed in early October.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index came in at 55.0 in the preliminary October reading for the closely followed survey, a tick lower than the September final reading of 55.1. Still, it\u2019s the lowest sentiment reading since May, when consumers reacted to President Donald Trump\u2019s tariff announcements. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires expected a steeper drop in sentiment to 53.5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Consumer sentiment surveys can gauge consumer spending, employment levels, inflation and other factors that help determine the strength of the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The survey, conducted through Monday, Oct. 6, showed little change from the prior month&#8217;s results, even amid the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/government-shutdown-starts-as-deadline-passes-without-deal-11821801\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:start of a federal government shutdown;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">start of a federal government shutdown<\/a>. The survey indicated that consumer perceptions of current economic conditions improved slightly in October, while expectations for future economic conditions declined somewhat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cOverall, consumers perceive very few changes in the outlook for the economy from last month,\u201d said survey director Joanne Hsu. \u201cInterviews reveal little evidence that the ongoing federal government shutdown has moved consumers\u2019 views of the economy thus far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The report showed that consumers in October still carried many of the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/consumer-confidence-drops-job-market-concerns-september-2025-11821615\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:worries they had in September;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">worries they had in September<\/a>, especially those related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/economic-worries-are-rising-for-most-americans-but-big-stock-holders-stay-positive-11819457\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:jobs market;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">jobs market<\/a>.
