Pictured – the Framework logo. (Image source: Framework)

Framework’s open-source sponsorships has sparked a fierce debate as users are accusing the company of enabling divisive figures, while others are defending its focus on software merit and inclusivity. Framework employees stand by its policy.

Framework, which is well-known for modular laptops and active support of open-source software, is now facing sharp criticism on its official community forum after they announced sponsorships for Hyprland, and after they have been promoting Omarchy for a while on social media. Some forum users are allegedly stating that Framework’s support is empowering individuals viewed as divisive or associated with far-right views – specifically mentioning Hyprland’s maintainer and David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH), the creator linked to Omarchy.

Posts in the forum show two main threads of concern. First, critics are arguing that Framework’s financial backing of these projects sends money to figures they say have damaged or polarized the open-source community. Specifically, accusations include exclusionary practices and supporting controversial political positions. Some users go a step further, stating that they would boycott Framework’s products or encourage others to do the same if the company continues down this path.

On the other hand, several community members and Framework team representatives accentuated the company’s “big tent” philosophy. The official statements attempt to clarify that Framework partners based on contributions to open-source software, not personal or political beliefs. Many users are still arguing that the focus should remain on the merits of the donated software, stating there is a lack of hard evidence linking Framework’s sponsorship directly to harmful political activities. Others are calling for less political division. They are also expressing support for Framework’s commitment to the broader open-source ecosystem rather than individual ideologies.

Regardless, the debate has resulted in strong reactions from both sides. As the conversation doesn’t look to be dying down anytime soon, Framework employees are still holding their stance on supporting open-source development as the primary goal for its partnerships, regardless of outside controversies. Nirav Patel (founder/CEO of Framework) also posted on X/Twitter regarding the whole situation – his statement is linked below:

Anubhav Sharma – Tech Writer – 1063 articles published on Notebookcheck since 2024

Fueled by a childhood spent taking apart video game consoles to see how they worked, I turned my passion for tech into writing.
