Algorithms designed to maximize user engagement amplify divisive content that inevitably leaves us outraged. Disinformation and misinformation spread on social media at rates seemingly impossible to contain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j57np400033b6moqfr5s7n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If that weren\u2019t enough, bad-faith actors exploit these dynamics, distorting reality for part of the population and deepening political divides.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j57np400043b6mjlu3wimb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People who were paying close attention to certain corners of the internet <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/the-future-of-the-culture-wars-is-here-and-its-gamerga-1646145844\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">saw this reality coming<\/a> more than a decade ago in Gamergate, in which an angry online mob waged a virulent harassment campaign against women and diversity in the video game industry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j57np400053b6mcd75m3x6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gamergate was one of the earliest indications that what happened online could have major implications offline \u2014 and that a few people who understood the mechanics of the internet could manipulate it to advance a nefarious agenda.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j57np400063b6m0xh6v90p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those who <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BriannaWu\/status\/1274343193228840966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">experienced<\/a> the harassment firsthand <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2019\/04\/black-feminists-alt-right-twitter-gamergate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warned<\/a> that if not taken seriously, the behaviors underlying Gamergate would fester.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j57np400073b6m75dz9u9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the years since, as some experts and observers see it, social media platforms on which Gamergate transpired failed to adequately combat toxic content and online abuse, while lawmakers, traditional media outlets and much of the public failed to see its relevance beyond the world of video games.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j57np400083b6mchdwew6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/16\/media\/steve-bannon-reliable-sources\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flooding the zone<\/a> to the use of memes, the tactics once employed by a niche community of gamers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/15\/tech\/twitter-x-history-breaking-the-bird\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all too familiar<\/a> today \u2014 they\u2019ve since developed into a political strategy that\u2019s routinely used in the halls of power.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j57np400093b6mydorvcgg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To use a popular internet shorthand, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/08\/15\/opinion\/what-is-gamergate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">everything is Gamergate<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000f3b6m8uv0wseo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On August 16, 2014, a 24-year-old male programmer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2015\/jan\/11\/gamergate-a-brief-history-of-a-computer-age-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted<\/a> a more than 9,000-word tirade about the dissolution of his relationship with video game developer Zo\u00eb Quinn. The rambling account contained screenshots of their private correspondences and accused Quinn, among several allegations, of sleeping with a journalist for the gaming site Kotaku in exchange for a positive review.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000g3b6m6c759uz2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere was no proof of this supposed illegitimately obtained review, just repetition of the Manifesto\u2019s accusations mixed with such conspiratorial conjecture that it would make someone wearing a tinfoil hat instantly sprout another, tinier tinfoil hat on top of it,\u201d Quinn wrote in \u201cCrash Override: How Gamergate (Nearly) Destroyed My Life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000h3b6mpnthzkoz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In reality, the reporter never even reviewed the game, and Kotaku <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/in-recent-days-ive-been-asked-several-times-about-a-pos-1624707346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said at the time<\/a> that its leadership team found \u201cno compelling evidence\u201d that the writer had traded favorable coverage for sex.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000i3b6mb11puklm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the ex-boyfriend\u2019s rant quickly attracted the attention of online forum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/16\/tech\/4chan-buffalo-shooting\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4chan<\/a> users, who seized on the alleged relationship between Quinn and the Kotaku writer. The events mutated into a leaderless harassment campaign known as Gamergate, eventually moving from 4chan to more mainstream social media platforms.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-691236694.jpg\" alt=\"Video game developer Zo\u00eb Quinn was a key target of Gamergate, enduring extensive harassment that included doxing, rape threats and death threats.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1738\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000j3b6m2cgq4uhn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anonymous gamers made rape and death threats against Quinn, feminist gaming critic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/10\/15\/tech\/utah-anita-sarkeesian-threat\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anita Sarkeesian<\/a>, game developer <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/03\/16\/technology\/syfy-the-internet-ruined-my-life-gamergate-brianna-wu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brianna Wu<\/a> and others who advocated for a more inclusive gaming industry, and released private information about them. The campaign\u2019s participants also <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/02\/intel-pulls-ads-from-site-after-gamergate-boycott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pressured companies<\/a> to stop advertising on gaming sites that they viewed as critical of gamer culture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000k3b6m2lipqvwu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gamergate activists claimed they were concerned about ethics in games journalism. But really they seemed to be responding to a perceived loss of status, said Adrienne Massanari, a scholar who researches digital culture and author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/9780262549417\/gaming-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gaming Democracy: How Silicon Valley Leveled Up the Far Right<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000l3b6m7ihzkr95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For a long time, video games were seen as the domain of young White men. When that was challenged, whether by a game developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/tech\/annals-of-technology\/zoe-quinns-depression-quest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">subverting industry norms<\/a> or a woman <a href=\"https:\/\/feministfrequency.com\/series\/tropes-vs-women-in-video-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">calling out stereotypical female characters<\/a>, a core contingent of gamers saw it as political correctness run amok, Massanari wrote in her book. And that sentiment soon expanded beyond video games.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000m3b6mqdnax6nr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere was a story on offer pretty quickly after Gamergate started gaining traction that it wasn\u2019t just about games,\u201d she told CNN. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t just that you were no longer the center of a pop culture universe. You\u2019re no longer the center of political life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000n3b6msifyslhd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gamergate wasn\u2019t the first instance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2014\/10\/trolls-will-always-win\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">harassment in gaming communities<\/a>, but it was the first time it reached that scale, Massanari wrote in her book.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000o3b6mtwh7weh0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What was notable about Gamergate, she told CNN, was the internet savvy of its participants, who manipulated social media to perpetuate abuse and promote their cause.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000p3b6mqa2l6hth@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Put simply, they gamed the system.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000q3b6mdnjl8mnz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Twitter, for instance, Gamergaters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/gamergate-about-media-ethics-or-harassing-women-harassment-data-show-279736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">flooded the mentions<\/a> of particular users as a form of harassment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000r3b6mtglxtqok@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They also used Twitter\u2019s hashtag and retweet functions to control public narrative. By generating a volume of activity on the platform, they could make it seem like a particular message was trending, even if only a small group of users was behind the posts.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-1240149754.jpg\" alt=\"Gamergate activists weaponized Twitter functions such as retweets, hashtags and mentions to attack targets and promote their cause, said digital culture scholar Adrienne Massanari.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1666\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000s3b6m2esilgij@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One notable example was #NotYourShield, which purportedly represented women and minority supporters of Gamergate who were tired of feminist activists claiming to speak on their behalf. Chat logs later <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2014\/09\/new-chat-logs-show-how-4chan-users-pushed-gamergate-into-the-national-spotlight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">revealed<\/a> that #NotYourShield was not an organic social media trend or movement but rather a campaign orchestrated by a small number of 4chan users using false online identities, seemingly in an attempt to defend Gamergate against criticisms of racism and misogyny.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000t3b6mrij6madd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While much of the harassment and public campaign happened on mainstream social media such as Twitter and Reddit, Massanari said Gamergate was coordinated on more niche platforms \u2014 an organizing strategy that, up until then, had been applied primarily by pro-democracy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/11\/tech\/twitter-elon-musk-social-movements-cec\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">social justice activists<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000u3b6mv1txay2o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cGamergate was that moment when people started realizing that you weren\u2019t going to necessarily see activism always be this net positive thing,\u201d Massanari added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000v3b6m9m720sv6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The extent of harassment and abuse that Gamergate\u2019s victims experienced \u2014 forcing some to leave their homes and go into hiding \u2014 showed just how badly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/2\/4\/7982099\/twitter-ceo-sent-memo-taking-personal-responsibility-for-the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tech companies had failed<\/a> to protect their users, Massanari and others said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000w3b6m80bqtzxs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As some in the tech industry see it, Gamergate activists were able to weaponize social media precisely because of how those platforms were designed. The problems, in other words, weren\u2019t a bug but a feature.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000x3b6mmqz21erc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Silicon Valley leaders, committed to upholding free speech, were overly permissive in their approach to online content, said Jason Goldman, who served as Twitter\u2019s first vice president of product and later as chief digital officer in the Obama White House. And because they were mostly White men who didn\u2019t experience the online harassment that women and minorities did, Goldman said they were naive about the possibility that their platforms could cause harm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000y3b6mke4mpn6n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere weren\u2019t enough people around who personally had skin in the game,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w000z3b6myev47n2x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Leslie Miley, an engineer who worked at Twitter from 2013 to 2015, said he and others in the company started to recognize how the platform was being misused, but Twitter lacked the robust infrastructure needed to effectively combat the toxic behavior.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w00103b6mmk7dfu03@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re playing a global game of Whac-a-Mole, and we need an army of octopus to do it,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd guess what? We don\u2019t have an army of octopus.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w00113b6m9h10x5fl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In response to those challenges, Twitter built out teams on user services and trust and safety, as well as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/technology\/story\/2022-04-27\/twitter-elon-musk-content-moderation-free-speech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">extensive policy framework<\/a> around content moderation. But executives were also reluctant to take bold actions \u2014 such as banning certain accounts or shutting down some discussions \u2014 that might reduce Twitter\u2019s user base and therefore negatively affect the business, according to Miley.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w00123b6me6lg5jdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey were allowed to organize, they were allowed to spread, and they were allowed to create content much longer than they should have,\u201d he said, referring to Gamergate activists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w00133b6mxjtxj7fq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Faced with mounting pressure, Twitter later instituted <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/11\/03\/technology\/business\/twitter-content-moderation-policy-updates\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more aggressive policies<\/a> that permanently banned accounts for repeated violations of its rules. (Such accounts were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/08\/tech\/twitter-unbanned-users-returning\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restored<\/a> en masse during Elon Musk\u2019s takeover of the platform, which is now known as X. Recently, the platform also announced it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RedditSafety\/comments\/1j4cd53\/warning_users_that_upvote_violent_content\/?rdt=42496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">begin warning users<\/a> who upvote violating content. A Reddit spokesperson told CNN that current company policy prohibits hateful and violent content on the platform.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8nimqa300003b6mhf0ga1hk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, the dominant culture of Reddit, Massanari wrote in her book, has become less willing to tolerate far-right speech over the years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w00163b6mgiiry7p0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But social media companies still struggle to balance the need to police abuse on their platforms, their foundational values of giving everyone a voice and the risk of alienating some users, Massanari said. In some instances, content policy changes have been met with outrage and backlash from users who had grown accustomed to digital spaces with few restrictions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w00173b6mz00xdp4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you imagine this big aircraft carrier that\u2019s turning, it\u2019s very hard once all those norms have been set up to start incrementally trying to reshape that space,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Gamergate became a tried-and-true playbook<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w00183b6ma8ubfyrx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gamergate\u2019s impact went beyond the gaming universe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w00193b6mg6b5z4x7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It mobilized a new generation of disaffected, young men into becoming politically active, Massanari wrote in her book.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001a3b6mm2l4z8qe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The movement found sympathetic allies in far-right media figures and internet personalities, many of whom built their names by championing the Gamergate cause, per Massanari.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001b3b6msolqsavh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pro-Gamergate influencers, in turn, exposed their followers to other political ideas, including a broad suspicion about contemporary institutions that they viewed as too beholden to identity politics and political correctness, she wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2181136014.jpg\" alt=\"Steve Bannon, Donald Trump's former White House strategist, saw Gamergate as a way to recruit disaffected young men into Trump's campaign, per a 2017 book by Bloomberg journalist Joshua Green.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001c3b6mch1039nz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Political strategist Steve Bannon understood the power of this dynamic acutely.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001d3b6mrkvpxdl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou can activate that army,\u201d Bannon told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/talkingtech\/2017\/07\/18\/steve-bannon-learned-harness-troll-army-world-warcraft\/489713001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloomberg reporter Joshua Green<\/a> in 2017. \u201cThey come in through Gamergate or whatever and then get turned onto politics and Trump.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001e3b6mnup2tdv1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But as Charlie Warzel put it in a 2019 piece for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/08\/15\/opinion\/what-is-gamergate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The New York Times Opinion<\/a>, Gamergate\u2019s \u201cmost powerful legacy is as proof of concept of how to wage a post-truth information war.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001f3b6mswlz0j4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gamergate gave rise to a pattern of sowing confusion and chaos in the information landscape, Massasnari said. Participants elevated new conspiracies and used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3037941\/the-secret-meaning-behind-gamergates-branding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">memes<\/a> and ironic rhetoric to send coded signals, allowing them to claim plausible deniability about troubling aspects of the movement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001g3b6mryp67tl6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Traditional newsrooms struggled to cover these communities and forces responsibly, giving equal weight to \u201cboth sides\u201d even if one side wasn\u2019t arguing or acting in good faith, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/datasociety.net\/library\/oxygen-of-amplification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> from Whitney Phillips, a scholar and author of \u201cThis Is Why We Can\u2019t Have Nice Things: Mapping the Relationship Between Online Trolling and Mainstream Culture.\u201d In some cases, they inadvertently amplified extremist ideology.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-1294968117.jpg\" alt=\"Elements of Gamergate were on display in conspiracies such as Pizzagate and QAnon, as well as the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001h3b6mqpk31xe8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In an eerily prescient article for <a href=\"https:\/\/deadspin.com\/the-future-of-the-culture-wars-is-here-and-its-gamerga-1646145844\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Deadspin<\/a> in 2014, Kyle Wagner predicted that this pattern would become the future of political and cultural battles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001i3b6mvfv47mv9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat we have in Gamergate is a glimpse of how these skirmishes will unfold in the future\u2014all the rhetorical weaponry and siegecraft of an internet comment section brought to bear on our culture, not just at the fringes but at the center,\u201d he wrote at the time. \u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing now is a rehearsal, where the mechanisms of a toxic and inhumane politics are being tested and improved.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001j3b6mjzclvoyy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the years, the Gamergate playbook would be replicated in conspiracies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/12\/06\/technology\/tech-pizzagate-online-harassment\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pizzagate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/03\/us\/what-is-qanon-trnd\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">QAnon<\/a>, as well as the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001k3b6maqood9yo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The legacies of Gamergate are complicated and far-reaching.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001l3b6mkcgal7j6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In one sense, per some scholars, Gamergate was a battle between an increasingly diverse society and a group of White men who felt threatened over those societal shifts. At least within the realm of video games, Gamergate supporters seem to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americangaming.org\/resources\/diversity-in-the-gaming-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">losing<\/a>: The gaming industry workforce is significantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americangaming.org\/resources\/diversity-in-the-gaming-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more diverse<\/a> than the US workforce more broadly, and studios and developers are adopting <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-gamergate-led-the-gaming-industry-to-embrace-more-diverse-and-caring-values-190068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more inclusive<\/a> storylines and characters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001m3b6m8zmxnaol@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/sweet-baby-video-games-harassment-gamergate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">backlash<\/a> against diversity <a href=\"https:\/\/newlinesmag.com\/reportage\/gaming-is-becoming-more-diverse-opening-a-new-front-in-the-culture-wars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">persists<\/a> \u2014 in video games and on a much grander scale, in President Donald Trump\u2019s elimination of federal DEI programs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001n3b6moibnwijg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, Gamergate did force more people in the tech industry to reckon with abuse and harassment. And while major companies have rolled back some efforts to curb harmful content on their platforms, others in the tech sector are building new social technologies with the lessons of Gamergate in mind, said Evan \u201cRabble\u201d Henshaw-Plath, a member of Twitter\u2019s founding team.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001o3b6m88flv3i2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Henshaw-Plath, the enduring lesson of Gamergate was that social media platforms as they were originally envisioned were only as good as the people using them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001p3b6mv3yuqlel@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat happened with Gamergate is inherent to what happens when you take human nature and you give them a tool that potentially puts the entirety of humanity in the same conversation,\u201d they said. \u201cAll of humanity\u2019s problems, dynamics and difficulties can get amplified if we design a system that doesn\u2019t account for them.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001q3b6m7tls7a9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that doesn\u2019t mean a toxic internet is inevitable, said Henshaw-Plath and others.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001r3b6muezrdctl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Regulators can implement rules to improve content moderation and mandate transparency by social media platforms. Tech companies can diversify their top ranks to help ensure their platforms are designed to be safe for everyone. And people in the industry can create new systems that put more power in the hands of users \u2014 like what X competitors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/13\/tech\/x-musk-bluesky-users-post-election\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bluesky<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/08\/tech\/mastodon-twitter-explainer-trnd\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mastodon<\/a> are doing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8j5887w001s3b6mmryekxhs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For many users, social media platforms were once an exciting, and even transformative, space for community.
