But fortunately, registered dietitian Natalie Rizzo \u2014 who creates balanced, nutritious meal plans for the <a href=\"https:\/\/smart.link\/i03pn3creclh2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Start TODAY app<\/a> \u2014\u00a0has an easy guideline to make sure you&#8217;re not overdoing it.<\/p>\n<p>Dietitian Tip of the Day: Avoid Foods With More Than 6 Grams of Added Sugar Per Serving<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-553d9b\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;When choosing packaged foods, I recommend keeping added sugar under 6 grams per serving,&#8221; Rizzo explains. For reference, a single teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams and 16 calories.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3c6c04\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;The American Heart Association suggests limiting added sugar to about 25\u201336 grams per day. When distributing that among meals and snacks, a single serving with more than 6 grams can quickly use up a large portion of that daily allowance,&#8221; Rizzo adds.<\/p>\n<p>Why It Matters<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c4472b\" class=\"body-graf\">The average American eats about 22 teaspoons of added sugar a day. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a7b766\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;Consistently eating high-sugar packaged foods can lead to excess calorie intake, weight gain, blood sugar issues and chronic inflammation,&#8221; Rizzo says. &#8220;All of these side effects can increase your risk for chronic disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8c7ccf\" class=\"body-graf\">What&#8217;s more, the serving size listed on foods is often less than what one would actually eat.<\/p>\n<p>How to Get Started<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-310350\" class=\"body-graf\">A food&#8217;s nutrition label typically states the amount of added sugar per serving, so that&#8217;s the best place to start to make informed dietary choices.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-366eaa\" class=\"body-graf\">Also, look for added sugars in the ingredients list, such as:<\/p>\n<p>Anything ending in &#8220;-ose,&#8221; like fructose and sucrose\u201cSugar\u201d in the name, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/cane-sugar-vs-high-fructose-corn-syrup-coca-cola-rcna220623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cane sugar<\/a>&#8220;Syrup\u201d in the name, like corn or evaporated cane syrupOther forms of sugar, like honey, molasses and agaveProcessed &#8220;fruit&#8221; ingredients, like fruit concentrates and nectars<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-91d911\" class=\"body-graf\">Some examples of surprising foods often high in added sugars include:<\/p>\n<p>Marinara sauceFlavored, plant-based milkOatmeal BreadCerealFlavored yogurtSalad dressing<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5e0881\" class=\"body-graf\">To limit added sugar in your diet, focus on eating whole, minimally processed foods, especially plant-based options, as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b1d0f2\" class=\"endmark body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/expert-tip-of-the-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TODAY\u2019s Expert Tip of the Day<\/a> series is all about simple strategies to make life a little easier.
