\n\tAfter opening locations in London and New York, Upsilon Gallery<\/a> has set its sights on Milan. The German-Argentine dealer Marcelo Zimmler<\/a> will open his first continental European space there on November 18, a 200-square-meter gallery just off Via Monte Napoleone, in the heart of the Quadrilatero\u2014the city\u2019s fashion and luxury nexus.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe move places Upsilon among a growing number of galleries testing Milan as it hopes to graduate from regional hub to global art capital, including Thaddaeus Ropac<\/a>, Cardi Gallery, and Robilant + Voena. The city has long possessed all the raw ingredients\u2014wealth, design, and history\u2014but, as George Nelson\u00a0wrote recently<\/a>\u00a0for On Balance, \u201cItaly\u2019s art scene has been here before, and it was a false dawn.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZimmler insists this time is different. \u201cMilan is a key cultural and financial hub\u2014essential ingredients for a thriving art market,\u201d he told me during a walk though of the Osvaldo Mariscotti<\/a> show at his Upper East Side space. \u201cWith our growing base of collectors in Italy, and Milan\u2019s proximity to Zurich and Paris, it\u2019s a seamless choice for us.\u201d He points to a pair of tailwinds that have altered the calculus: Italy\u2019s surprise decision to slash VAT on art sales\u00a0from 22 to 5 percent<\/a>, and the influx of wealthy British residents fleeing the UK\u2019s new tax regime.<\/p>\n

\n\tThose macro shifts are hard to ignore. Rome rolled out the lowest VAT on art in the Eurozone in June; by August, estate agents were already touting Milan\u2019s flat-tax advantages to disaffected London financiers. \u201cThey\u2019ve been working on that reform for years,\u201d Zimmler said, \u201cand everyone expects it to have a positive effect on sales.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe gallery\u2019s debut exhibition\u2014a Milan chapter of Osvaldo Mariscotti\u2019s\u00a0Valley\u00a0series\u2014will coincide with twin shows already on view in Upsilon\u2019s London and New York outposts.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe three-part project, Zimmler said, \u201cconnects our cities in one conversation.\u201d The Milan presentation includes four canvases and a bilingual catalogue edited by critics David Ebony and Alex Grimley.<\/p>\n

\n\tIf Ropac\u2019s arrival signaled institutional heft, Upsilon\u2019s may indicate entrepreneurial agility. Founded in 2016 as an online platform, the gallery has evolved into a hybrid operation\u2014part dealership, part media venture. During our talk in New York, Zimmler described a business model that now depends as much on events, partnerships, and brand collaborations as on direct sales. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGalleries are empty most of the time,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we make the space available\u2014for talks, wine tastings, even readings. It\u2019s about creating experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat logic extends to Milan. The new gallery\u2019s Ceppo di Gr\u00e9 flooring and marble detailing nod to the city\u2019s architecture, while its location\u2014steps from Prada and Bulgari\u2014puts it in conversation with the luxury industry. \u201cArt is a luxury good by definition,\u201d Zimmler said. \u201cIt makes more sense for us to collaborate with other luxury categories than to open a caf\u00e9.\u201d He plans to stage design-forward exhibitions during Salone del Mobile and is already developing projects with artists like Hanna Lim, whose ceramic work bridges craft and fashion.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhether Milan will reward such optimism is unclear. The last time Italy looked poised for an art-market boom\u2014when Gagosian opened in Rome in 2007\u2014the enthusiasm outpaced the reality. But for dealers like Zimmler, the bet seems worth it. \u201cWe have a knack for opening when the macro conditions are not at their best,\u201d he said with a laugh. \u201cIf you can make it work now, imagine when things actually improve.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"After opening locations in London and New York, Upsilon Gallery has set its sights on Milan.
