Jupiter will be close on their heels.<\/p>\n<p>Head out an hour before midnight local time to see the half-lit moon climb above the northeastern horizon, with the reddish light of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22009-betelgeuse.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22009-betelgeuse.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Betelgeuse<\/a> twinkling brightly to its right. The left half of the lunar disk will be bathed in direct sunlight and its left veiled in shadow.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"2b042c9e-4902-4309-9f24-f5af1d185913-2\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16659-constellation-orion.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16659-constellation-orion.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellation Orion<\/a> will provide a wealth of beautiful naked eye targets to observe on the night of Oct. 12. Most notable is the red star Betelgeuse , a colossal stellar body in the twilight of its existence. It is expected to explode in a dramatic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supernova<\/a> as bright as a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">full moon<\/a> in Earth&#8217;s sky upon exhausting its supply of helium and heavier fuel reserves \u2014 a process that could take tens of thousands of years.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"f608d761-57d8-4465-b4a6-cb9c6c98f0af\">Look to the right of Betelgeuse to spot the three <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a> of the famous <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28072-orions-belt.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28072-orions-belt.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion&#8217;s Belt<\/a> <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-an-asterism\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-an-asterism\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asterism<\/a> \u2014 Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka \u2014 stacked on top of each other, with the blue supergiant Rigel, the brightest point of light in the famous constellation, shining less than 10 degrees beyond. Remember, 10 degrees is the equivalent to the width of your fist held at arm&#8217;s length against the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>You may notice a hazy blur of light close to Orion&#8217;s belt as the constellation slips free of the horizon.
