Celtic defender Kieran Tierney helped to guarantee Scotland a 2026 World Cup play-off place in the win over Belarus.<\/p>\n

Tierney<\/a> has been used sparingly by Steve Clarke in the international window as the Celtic<\/a> fullback made a seven-minute appearance against Denmark and an 18-minute outing against Belarus.<\/p>\n

With Scotland close to an automatic place in next summer\u2019s 2026 World Cup<\/a>, the Celtic defender could well be on Steve Clarke\u2019s plane to the USA.<\/p>\n

But as Scotland fans appeared to criticise the Celtic hero\u2019s performance,<\/a> the national media had a different reaction to Tierney\u2019s role in the win over Belarus.<\/p>\n

Tierney replaced fellow Celtic team-mate Anthony Ralston in the right full-back role as Scotland sat 1-0 up.<\/p>\n

Steve Clarke\u2019s side looked nervy until Scott McTominay put the Scots 2-0 up, however, Tierney\u2019s role in the win didn\u2019t go unnoticed by Scotland\u2019s media as Belarus turned the screw.<\/p>\n

The Herald<\/a>: \u201cNaturally a left-back, Tierney was introduced at right-back for the closing stages and performed amicably.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Scotsman<\/a>: \u201cAsked to patrol the right flank in what is not a natural role for the left-sided defender. Fared fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Edinburgh News<\/a>: \u201cIntroduced for Ralston and covered at right-back for the closing 20 minutes to help shore things up. Didn\u2019t look comfortable in that position.\u201d<\/p>\n

Celtic defender Kieran Tierney\u2019s Scotland stats<\/p>\n

Tierney has never played right-back in his career at all whether that\u2019s been at Celtic and Arsenal and it\u2019s clear Clarke trusted the Celtic defender to put in a shift.<\/p>\n
