(Image: Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">A lost <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"owl Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">owl <\/a>had to be rescued by helicopter after landing on an oil platform 180 miles out to sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"short-eared owlLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">short-eared owl<\/a> was discovered exhausted and disorientated by workers on the North Sea offshore rig after being blown off course by Storm Amy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">It sought refuge on the Noble Patriot oil platform off the coast of Shetland and was <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"starvingLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">starving<\/a> and too tired to fly when found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Staff on the rig fed the bird <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"raw chickenLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">raw chicken<\/a> for a couple of days before it was airlifted to safety on Friday after hitching a lift on a helicopter taking workers back to shore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">After arriving at Sumburgh Airport on Shetland the owl, named Oli by the oil workers, was taken into the care of Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/561289126_1131465935769362_9053082767938058631_n.jpg\" alt=\"Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The owl was winched back to Shetland. (Image: Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">The owl was checked over at a local <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"veterinaryLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">veterinary<\/a> surgery and is now being &#8220;fattened up&#8221; before being released back into the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Rig worker Sam Crowe, who caught the owl, said: &#8220;It took me a good few times to catch it on the rig but finally got my hands on it knowing it wasn&#8217;t going to survive out here and needed to get it back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">&#8220;We made it a little home, it got some chicken and water. So glad to see everybody came together to help this beautiful animal out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">It is thought the owl may have been attempting to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"migrateLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">migrate<\/a> when it was caught up in the first named storm of the season which battered Scotland with winds of up to 96mph and left thousands of homes without power.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/561579128_1131466462435976_8924729158847178241_n.jpg\" alt=\"The owl is thought to have got lost during Storm Amy. \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The owl is thought to have got lost during Storm Amy. (Image: Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Pete Bevington, of Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary, said: &#8220;It was a rare privilege for Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary to be able to help with the rescue of this majestic bird.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">&#8220;We received a call from on board the Noble Patriot oil rig 180 miles north east of Shetland, where a short-eared owl had landed in a state of exhaustion after being blown off course by Storm Amy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">&#8220;After being kept alive on raw chicken for a couple of days, this majestic bird was flown on Friday morning into Sumburgh airport by helicopter where we picked it up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">&#8220;We took it straight to vet nurse Lisa Truman who has expertise with birds and wildlife and she was able to make sure it was uninjured.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/561601884_1131463852436237_9192672051154662772_n.jpg\" alt=\"The owl was fed raw chicken on the oil rig. \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The owl was fed raw chicken on the oil rig. What a treat for everyone who came into contact with this beautiful creature.
